UKM dalam era globalisasi masih memegang peran penting khususnya dalam ketahanan ekonomi dan pemberdayaan masyarakat. Kata kuncinya adalah memperkuat perekonomian lokal dengan tetap menghasilkan produk berkualitas dan berdaya saing internasional. Pemerintah pusat dan daerah memegang peran penting dalam memberikan dukungan sehingga UKM dapat tumbuh dan berkembang sesuai dengan tahap bisnis. Tiga hal penting untuk penumbuhan dan keberlanjutan bisnis UKM yang perlu difasilitasi pemerintah pusat dan daerah adalah kemudahan perizinan, akses terhadap sumber pembiayaan atau modal, dan akses serta kemampuan memasuki pasar, baik domestik maupun internasional. Sasaran lain dari pembangunan UKM tentunya adalah memperluas dampak ekonomi dengan trickle down effect yang dapat ditimbulkan. Dalam hal ini penguatan rantai nilai UKM baik forward maupun backward linkage harus memperoleh perhatian khusus baik dari pelaku maupun pembuat kebijakan. Dengan demikian ekosistem dari kewirausahaan dapat terbentuk dengan baik dan dapat mendorong terciptanya jumlah wirausaha baru di Indonesia yang jumlahnya masih relatif lebih sedikit dibandingkan dengan negara Asia Tenggara lainnya
