Hilman matkassa kuvaa syvää kotiseuturakkautta synnyin- ja asuinpaikkaa kohtaan Karjalassa. Kuolismaasta evakkoon joutuminen merkitsi muutosta ja irtautumista monista tutuista asioista ja ihmisistä. Kaunis kotipiha, tutut polut ja metsät, ahkerin käsit tehdyt ruokavarastot oli jätettävä sotatantereelle. Palatessaan takaisin poltetuille raunioille Hilma ja Josua olivat valmiita tekemään työtä oman elämänsä eteen; rakentamaan, viljelemään ja kunnostamaan tilaa. Toisen lähdön jälkeen paluuta ei enää ollut. He sopeutuivat uuteen elämään monissa evakkopaikoissa ja viimeiseksi he saivat uuden kodin Issakassa, mutta kaipuu ja ikävä Karjalaan säilyi heissä koko loppuelämän.
