Guanxi (The Art of Relationships)

Half a world away from the calm beauty of Puget Sound, there's a lab where Bill Gates's software dreams come true. . . . So begins Guanxi, the compelling on-the-scenes tale of the allure of China today -- and of a unique partnership between the world's most famous capitalist and the world's largest communist nation that showcases what it takes to compete in the age of global innovation. Guanxi (gwan-shee), the Chinese term for mutually beneficial relationships essential to success in the Middle Kingdom, tells the story of the juggernaut research lab that underpins Microsoft's relationship building in China. Unfurled through a gripping narrative that moves between Beijing and Microsoft headqu...

Endocrine Abnormalities and Renal Complications

Vertebrate kidneys play a vital role in regulating body homeostasis, in addition to being instrumental in preventing large blood molecules from filtering out into the urine. Several endocrine factors have an influential role in renal health. Hormones are necessary for the normal health of the kidney and altered levels of them are harmful to glomerular health, manifesting in chronic kidney disease and proteinuria. Recent evidence attributes novel roles to several endocrine mediators in renal biology, including growth hormone, thyroxine, and glucocorticoids. In recent times, researchers have demonstrated altered levels of these hormones elicit a decline in renal function by afflicting several cellular and molecular manifestations in specific renal cells. More research is needed to better understand this connection and its potential translational implications.

Emerging Molecular Signaling Pathways and Therapeutic Targets in the Genitourinary Immune Microenvironment

It is well known that the immune microenvironment is critical to the progression of genitourinary malignancies and benign diseases. A variety of cellular and molecular properties of the immune microenvironment may influence disease outcome by altering the balance of suppressive versus inflammatory or cytotoxic responses. Emerging evidence suggests that immunoediting is a key factor of phenotypic change, immunological alterations caused by physical activity or drug treatments could promote antitumor or anti-inflammatory activity. Conversely, microenvironment deficits or dysregulation can instigate or worsen pathological progression, thereby contributing to urinary disease development and prog...
