The Adaptation and Response of Aquatic Animals in the Context of Global Climate Change
Anthropogenic climate change has driven widespread changes in marine environments, including ocean warming, ocean acidification, and the formation of hypoxic zones. Such environmental changes would pose direct challenges to the survival and adaptation of aquatic organisms, greatly affecting the biodiversity of marine life and marine ecosystems. Changes in the marine environment are likely to have strong effects at the physiological, behavioral, and molecular levels, with implications at the individual, population, and species levels, resulting in the degradation of genetic resources through massive mortality. For example, the ingestion, digestion, respiration, and growth of aquatic animals were greatly depressed under extreme environments. In the long run, maintaining a sustainable ocean would require a better understanding of the adaptation of marine animals in response to the effects of multiple environmental stressors. The Research Topic is aimed to discuss the potential impacts of individual and compounded extreme environments on aquatic animals, as well as the regulatory mechanisms and adaptation strategies of marine species to cope with these impacts.

In Gilded Voices: Economics, Politics, and Storytelling in the Yangzi Delta since 1949, Qiliang He pieces together published, archival, and oral history sources to explore the role of the cultural market in mediating between the state and artists in the PRC era. By focusing on pingtan, a storytelling art using the Suzhou dialect, the book documents both the state’s efforts to police artists and their repertoire and storytellers’ collaboration with, as well as resistance to, state supervision and intervention. The book thereby challenges long-held scholarly assumptions about the Chinese Communist Party’s success in politicizing popular culture, patronizing artists, abolishing the cultural market, and enforcing rigid censorship in Mao’s times.

Customized Artificial Implants: Bionic Design and Multiscale Evaluation
Artificial implants have been commonly used to replace or fix damaged tissue in orthopedics. However, due to the inter-individual differences and the complexities of anatomical structures and load conditions, traditional implants cannot meet the clinical requirements. In recent years, questions relating to customized artificial implants have been getting more and more attention from the research community. Challenges to implementing precision design and evaluation arise not only from the design need of considering bionic structures, kinematical function, mechanical performances, and biological functional similarity but also from the multiscale comprehensive evaluation, the latter involves biomechanics and biotribology of musculoskeletal systems from macro musculoskeletal multibody dynamics to micromechanics of porous structures. Established analysis technologies such as musculoskeletal multibody dynamics modeling and neuromusculoskeletal modeling are being well developed and evolved through combining/coupling with finite element analyses and, more recently, by novel artificial intelligence approaches.
