School Social Work Services in Federally Funded Programs

This book identifies the barriers between social work intervention in education and government-funded programs that impact African American students. The chapters approach these issues from a child-centered perspective, which has proven critical in developing positive and sustainable relationships with African American students. As children begin to understand more about their lives and the world around them, they also develop opinions that help them identify who they are as individuals and where they see themselves in the world. From a qualitative research methodology approach, trust has been identified as a fundamental factor and potential barrier among all variables acknowledged. Interviews with ten African American high school and college students were conducted to discuss their perspectives on education, family life, peer interaction, and social work intervention.

Statistical Questions in Evidence-based Medicine is a companion volume to the new edition of An Introduction to Medical Statistics and includes questions and answers which are complementary to the textbook. This new book takes a practical approach that develops an understanding of statistics and suggests appropriate questions to ask about research methods, figures and conclusions and whether they are evidence based. The book is a model of clarity and common sense in what is frequently an unnecessarily obscure area of science. It looks at the application of and provides a critique of statistics, encouraging an evidence-based approached to medical statistics. Through the critical evaulation of...

In 'Hello, Goodbye', Angela K. is a society columnist for Goodbye! Magazine, and gets to attend all of the season's most sensational Dernières: the most exclusive celebrity funerals. She prides herself on finally having joined the ranks of the Immortals - until a sad, badly-dressed old couple arrives to disrupt her world. Five Miles from Outer Hope

An instant classic of teenage self-discovery by prize-winning Nicola Barker, an "anarchic and lovingly perverse writer" (Ali Smith) Summer, 1981. Medve, sixteen years old and six foot three in her crocheted stockings, is marooned in a semi-derelict hotel on a tiny island off the coast of Devon, England. There's nothing to do but paint novelty mugs, dream of literary murders, and despair of her gothically unprepossessing family--including Mo, her sex toy-inventing mother; Poodle, her shamefully flat-chested sister; and four-year-old Feely, who wants to grow up to be a bulimic. Until one day a ginger-headed stranger arrives . . . One of our most enjoyably unconventional contemporary writers, Nicola Barker, roots out the darkly surreal in a forgotten corner of the world. Five Miles from Outer Hope is a startling, luminous book, and Medve's voice speaks bluntly from the heart, with results that are original and poignant.
