Valérie Belin: Complete Work
Valérie Belins photographs avoid simple representation or description, even though she often chooses to photograph simple objects, such as glasses, silverware, Venetian mirrors, cars, or animal carcasses. Instead she is attempting to unveil the very essence of her subjects and to delve into the deepest secrets of things, of matter and of light, almost independent of the objects themselves. This comprehensive retrospective of Belins work also includes all her other suites her questioning of corporeality in her explicit studies of bodybuilders; the series of Moroccan brides which broach complex issues of identity and representation; and her investigations of hybrid entities, such as transsexuals, Michael Jackson look-alikes and the mannequins in shop windows.
Mindscapes
Where does private space end and public space begin? How does the individual set about defining these boundaries? How have the computer and the internet altered the relationship between private and public space? Photographer Jacqueline Hassink explores these and similar questions in her project "Mindscapes". Looking at the USA and Japan, two of the economically most influential countries in the world, she has captured the rooms of CEOs, the screen savers of top managers, the coffee cups of office personnel, the extravagant shoes of star designers, or the changing rooms of leading fashion houses in photos taken in 500 leading companies. She creates not only a photographic excursion through closed spaces, but also a mosaic of those private articles which are used to bridge the gap between public and private rooms. Author and photographer Jacqueline Hassink lives and works in New York. Since 1993 her photos have been exhibited in Europe and the USA.
Red Roses, Yellow Rain
Trained sociologist and photographer Marrigje de Maar (born 1944) seeks out those magical households in which families have come together for generations--where life has "worn itself into" a house. Over the course of five trips to China, she photographed housing in Chinese communes that had been scheduled for demolition, finding within them a surprising diversity of types and uses of classical living spaces.
Imperial Courts, 1993-2015
In 1992, Dana Lixenberg travelled to South Central Los Angeles for a magazine story on the riots that erupted following the verdict in the Rodney King trial. What she encountered inspired her to revisit the area, and led her to the community of the Imperial Courts housing project in Watts. Returning countless times over the following twenty-two years, Lixenberg gradually created a collaborative portrait of the changing face of this community. Over the years, some in the community were killed, while others disappeared or went to jail, and others, once children in early photographs, grew up and had children of their own. In this way, Imperial Courts constitutes a complex and evocative record of the passage of time in an underserved community.
