A Coat of Many Colours
A major exhibition celebrating two centuries of Jewish life in Canada is among the first in a series of special presentations on Canadian culture at the Canadian Museum of Civilization's new facility in Hull, Quebec. For six months months, beginning on April 5, 1990, "A Coat of Many Colours" will invite visitors to explore the rich traditions of Canada's Jewish community- from Jewish involvement in Canada's burgeoning fur trade in the 18th century to the challenges faced by recent immigrants. Curatorship
Museums and cultural centres play an important role in the re-emergence of cultural autonomy in indigenous societies. The May 1994 symposium, Curatorship: Indigenous Perspectives in Post-Colonial Societies, examined the realignment of relationships between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples of the Commonwealth in the context of traditional museum practices. It supported the right of Indigenous peoples to control the management of their cultural heritage and underlined the need for redefining museum models.

Betty Issenman examines all aspects of winter and summer Inuit clothing, going back 4000 years, with particular emphasis on northern Canadian Inuit. She also describes the kinds of material and tools used to make the clothing. The focus is on on Inuit clothing as protection, identity, and culture bearer, roles it has played for thousands of years. No other book brings together contemporary and historical material from the circumpolar worlds with original research. Sinews of Survival is a fascinating study of Inuit clothing, past and present. It includes over 200 illustrations of various kinds of clothing. The voices of the Inuit are heard throughout the text in quotations from consultations and the literature. By describing one component of Inuit society, the author opens a pathway to understanding the culture as a whole.

In this fascinating study of Northwest Coast art, Jonathan Meuli has not only outlined a history of ideas associated with Northwest Coast art objects from pre-Contact time to the present day, but has also examined the ways in which the physical location and contexts in which the objects are produced has helped to determine their meanings. Locating his linear historical narrative within a wider exploration of ethnographic art ideas, which emphasizes links across cultures, Meuli examines the differing attitudes towards Northwest Coast material culture, particularly as these are embodied in oral mythic narratives, collection methods and architectural constructions.
