Curatorship

Museums and cultural centres play an important role in the re-emergence of cultural autonomy in indigenous societies. The May 1994 symposium, Curatorship: Indigenous Perspectives in Post-Colonial Societies, examined the realignment of relationships between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples of the Commonwealth in the context of traditional museum practices. It supported the right of Indigenous peoples to control the management of their cultural heritage and underlined the need for redefining museum models.

A World Inside

"In the 1850s, Canada's national museum was little more than a piece of legislation governing the Geological Survey of Canada's small collection of First People's artifacts in Montreal. Despite decades of wars and worldwide economic depression, funding and staff shortages, and a struggle for a permanent home, it has emerged as a renowned human history and cultural institution. This 150th anniversary history profiles the institution as well as the people who tirelessly championed it to ensure a lasting legacy for generations of Canadians."--BOOK JACKET.

A major exhibition celebrating two centuries of Jewish life in Canada is among the first in a series of special presentations on Canadian culture at the Canadian Museum of Civilization's new facility in Hull, Quebec. For six months months, beginning on April 5, 1990, "A Coat of Many Colours" will invite visitors to explore the rich traditions of Canada's Jewish community- from Jewish involvement in Canada's burgeoning fur trade in the 18th century to the challenges faced by recent immigrants. After its debut in Hull, the exhibition will tour museums across Canada and go on to New York City before reaching its final venue- Beth Hatefutsoth, The Museum of the Jewish Diaspora- in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1993.-From Page 2
