A poignant meditation on mortality from a beloved Canadian poet A writer friend once pointed out that whenever Stuart Ross got close to something heavy and “real” in a poem, a hamburger would inevitably appear for comic relief. Written during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, shortly after the sudden death of his brother left him the last living member of his family and as a catastrophic diagnosis meant anticipating the death of his closest friend, this meditation on mortality — a kind of literary shiva — is Ross’s most personal book to date. More than a catalogue of losses, The Book of Grief and Hamburgers is a moving act of resistance against self-annihilation and a desperate attempt to embrace all that was good in his relationships with those most dear to him.
Michael Triegel, whose paintings of religious subjects led him to receive a commission for an official portrait of Pope Benedict XVI, is one of the most important artists of the New Leipzig School, and this highly illustrated volume offers the first overview of his career to date. It reproduces more than 120 works, primarily paintings, created between 2003 and 2010, alongside preparatory sketches, drawings, watercolors, and etchings, while essays and commentaries set Triegel's work in context of contemporary trends and the cultural situation of Germany and Europe in the period.
This ethnographic study of contemporary American Renaissance fairs focuses on the Maryland Renaissance Festival, in which participants recreate sixteenth-century England through performances of theater, combat-at-arms, processions, street hawking, and meticulously faithful historical reconstructions. It is also partly an autobiographical account of interactive improvisation, subcultures within the festival framework, the delineation between living history and historical elaboration, and a new understanding of performers and patrons.
