Birger Olsson var endast 17 år då han 1898 gav sig ut på havet för första gången. Då tog han hyra på en ångare som hette "Hemland". Efter att huvudsakligen rest runt på Östersjön återvände han kort till Sverige innan han gav sig ut igen på våren 1899 med ångaren "Vanland" och hamnade i Liverpool, England.
