New Approaches to Human Dignity in the Context of Qur'ānic Anthropology

In recent years, the challenge of relating one’s own theological concept of man and his destiny to secular topics, such as the inviolability of human dignity, has generated a dynamic discourse about how Islamic anthropology can help cultivate and perfect the individual self and social ‘humanisation’. This anthology brings together contemporary Muslim and non-Muslim approaches to the secular notion of human dignity with reference to the Islamic tradition in general and the anthropology of the Qur’ān in particular. The collection presents approaches to Islamic theological anthropology, across a range of fields, especially with regard to the narrative of Adam and Iblīs, which occurs i...

The transfer of public resources to the private sector through public procurement procedures opens an unprecedented opportunity for corruption and bribery. Moreover, the complex structure of the health sector leaves the sector more vulnerable to corruption and bribery than other sectors. Along with the COVID-19 pandemic, the risk of corruption and bribery in public procurements has increased more than ever. Corruption and bribery cause substandard and counterfeit products to be released to the market by disrupting the health sector and market, damage the confidence in public procurements, cause the waste of resources, and most importantly risk the lives of millions of people. Although governments experience an extraordinary crisis, we claim that the most crucial arms in the fight against corruption and bribery during public procurements in the health sector are transparency and accountability.

The author examines Ian Rankin's use of the gothic convention of the ghost in Black and Blue, Dead Souls, Set in Darkness, and "The Very Last Drop." In these works, ghosts and skeletons are used as metaphors for Detective Inspector John Rebus's guilt over past mistakes and for the dark past of his home city, Edinburgh. This article originally appeared in Clues: A Journal of Detection, Volume 30, Issue 2.

The Ethics of Bribery

While most people assume that all bribery is unethical, the literature provides examples and philosophical arguments to support the proposition that some bribery may actually be ethical, based on utilitarian grounds. This book provides a theoretical and empirical examination of bribery from an ethical perspective. It examines empirical data from over 80 countries and reports on attitudes toward bribery examining demographic variables such as gender, age, ethnicity, education, income level, religion and social class. Multi-country comparisons are provided to determine whether views toward bribery differ by geographic location.

Mag. Dr. Hüseyin I. Çiçek ist Univ.-Assistent Postdoc am Institut für Islamisch-Theologische Studien der Universität Wien, assoziierter Mitarbeiter am Erlanger Zentrum für Islam und Recht in Europa und CASSIS-Fellow an der Universität Bonn
