A Literary Mirror
A Literary mirror is the first English-language work to comprehensively analyse Indonesian-language literature from Bali from a literary and cultural viewpoint. It covers the period from 1920 to 2000. This is an extremely rich field for research into the ways Balinese view their culture and how they respond to external cultural forces. This work complements the large number of existing studies of Bali and its history, anthropology, traditional literature, and the performing arts. A Literary Mirror is an invaluable resource for those researching twentieth-century Balinese authors who wrote in Indonesian. The Kecak and Cultural Tourism on Bali
"The Kecak is one of the most well-known dramatic dance performance practices on Bali. It is based on stories from the Old-Indian epic Ramayana, performed by an ensemble of male and female solo dancers and accompanied by a group consisting of approximately 100 men, who function both as musical accompaniment and living scenery that can be flexibly choreographed. Since its genesis in the 1930s the Kecak has been almost solely performed in a tourist context. This book gives a thorough analysis and description of the Kecak in its present form and explores how the Kecak became and stayed a tourist genre for more than 80 years. The book is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on the Kecak in its present form, including musical, choreographic, and dramatic elements. The connection between cultural tourism on Bali and Kecak performance practice is analyzed in detail, including the dependency between tourism professionals and artists and ways of promoting the kecak. Small Farmers for Global Food Security
Food systems in Indonesia and worldwide have experienced major transformations in the wake of agricultural modernisation. Once intact eco-systems have declined dramatically, along with human diets, long term food security and social cohesion. Using long-term ethnographic research, we documented this loss of traditional food systems in Java, Bali, East Timor and India, but also a recent revival and reinvention of sustainable production methods and community-based distribution systems. A growing movement of small farmers now reject the dominant paradigm of aggressive capitalist development, and are re-creating food systems based on moral ecology – a new concept we introduce to characterise food systems that regenerate the natural environment and serve the common good, rather than maximise profit. Small farmers like these already feed two thirds of humanity using only a third of agricultural land. With proper support, we argue, they could feed the entire world, using sustainable and socially responsible approaches to eradicate world hunger.
