Self Managed Learning and the New Educational Paradigm proposes revolutionary change to the educational system. The overwhelming research evidence is that the sum total of educational and training input accounts typically for only 10–20% of what makes a person an effective human being. Balancing theory, evidence and practice, this ground-breaking book demonstrates that current structures in education are ill-equipped to support a learning-based approach. It establishes the case that learning, as a core human activity, is too important to be left to schools and other educational institutions. The book goes beyond just a critique of current practice in showing how a New Educational Paradigm ...
'Brilliant ... it will change how you think about confidence.' Johann Hari 'Important for everyone but crucial for women.' Mary Robinson 'Interesting and important.' Steven Pinker __________ Why do boys instinctively bullshit more than girls? How do economic recessions shape a generation's confidence? The Book of Dave is Booker-shortlisted author Will Self's dazzling sixth novel What if a demented London cabbie called Dave Rudman wrote a book to his estranged son to give him some fatherly advice? What if that book was buried in Hampstead and hundreds of years later, when rising sea levels have put London underwater, spawned a religion? What if one man decided to question life according to Dave? And what if Dave had indeed made a mistake? Shuttling between the recent past and a far-off future where England is terribly altered, The Book of Dave is a strange and troubling mirror held up to our times: disturbing, satirizing and vilifying who and what we think we are. At once a meditation upon...

Over the last two decades the importance of Self Managed Learning (SML) has become increasingly recognized. This book shows how it has revolutionized learning in organizations such as Ericsson, PPP Healthcare and Sainsbury’s, and how it has contributed to wider organizational change. The book consists of four Parts. Part I places SML against the backdrop of changing global trends and the organizational responses to them. It examines how these have led to the need for people to be more self managing and provides an overview of an SML programme. Part II shows SML programmes in action by presenting case studies from nine very different organizations which have used this approach. Part III looks at SML methods in more depth by concentrating on strategic learning contracts, learning groups and how SML can be supported. Finally, Part IV concludes and looks to the future. Rigorously researched, Self Managed Learning in Action demonstrates that this important approach can be used in a wide variety of contexts and cultures, in the private sector and in the public sector, and for a wide range of staff.
‘Self research’ is both a therapeutic and a research endeavour that enables the subject of the research to interpret and validate their own data. In Self Research, Ian Law outlines and draws together the theoretical, institutional and practice elements of this work, and offers illustrative examples of how different elements of the methodology can be applied in practice. He proposes a methodology for the practice of self research that is based on an epistemological approach, thereby closing the interpretative gap between the researcher and the researched. Engaging in therapeutic work with those who experience their sense of self as problematic can be transformative in two key respects: it...
The Wisdom of Strategic Learning has enabled many organizations to develop a strategic approach to learning and development. Its premise that learning must be integrated with the strategic direction of the organization has been validated by numerous successful businesses which have implemented its tried and tested approaches. This second edition of Ian Cunningham's book updates and expands material on the importance of the self managed learning approach to create focused, active and committed employees. A new chapter on the role and development of staff in SML programmes has been added, along with new appendices, for example on selling the approach. With new case material including the use of online groups on the Internet, this practical, thought-provoking book shows how the ideas behind the learning organization can be applied for strategic advantage.
We all aspire to succeed in work and life. According to Abraham Maslow, once our basic needs such as food and shelter are taken care of, we want to fulfil our potential, to be the best possible version of ourselves. So what prevents us from achieving this? Some of us are beaten by the setbacks and challenges that life inevitably scatters across our path. For others, the fear of failure or lack of confidence can cause us to retreat into our comfort zone and avoid risk. In short, we simply give up and reconcile ourselves to disappointment. In work, this can lead to demotivation and disengagement. Whatever inhibits us from fulfilling our potential, there is now a remarkable groundswell of scien...
