Social enterprises present an alternative to business-as-usual with their combination of core social and environmental objectives being addressed through commercial approaches. In this way they present an alternative avenue for a sustainable prosperity that is not driven by profit but rather focused on flourishing and living within ecological limits. In the UK, there has been particular interest and support for the creation of start-ups and the scaling of existing social enterprises. The term social enterprise has been in use in the UK since the 1970s, and the current approaches are shaped by the philanthropic traditions of charities, the cooperative traditions of democratic governance, and ...

Restless

From Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author Bella Love-Wins, comes a fake escort meets billionaire romance standalone. I have all the power in the world… but I can’t control her. Cooper The world has bent to my will all my life. The billions I have built from nothing, the houses, the cars, the companies, the women. I have them all because I have learned to control every aspect of my life. Except for Amelia. From the second she walked into my life, she’s turned my whole world upside down. I mistook her for the escort date I had hired to take to a business event, and since then, Amelia is the one thing I want … and the one thing I can’t have. But whatever it takes, I plan to change that and make her mine. She can’t run forever. Author’s Note: Restless is a full-length fake escort meets billionaire romance standalone with a happily ever after ending and no cliffhanger. If you like alpha male billionaires and the impossible-to-tame, independent women who capture their attention, grab this story, and don't let go!

Reclaiming health and safety for all

  • Categories: Law

The focus of this review has been on the 200 or so regulations and the 53 Approved codes of practice owned by the Health and Safety Executive. It concentrates on areas where evidence and contributions have indicated that regulations are putting undue costs on business whilst doing little to improve health and safety outcomes. The general sweep of requirements set out in health and safety legislation are broadly fit for purpose but there are a few that offer little benefit to health and safety and which the government should remove, revise or clarify, in particular the duties for self-employed people whose work activities pose no potential risk of harm to others. The much bigger problem is that regulator requirements are misunderstood and applied inappropriately and recommendations are put forward to address this. They seek to: streamline the body of regulation; re-direct enforcement activity towards business where there is the greatest risk of injury or ill health; re-balancing the civil justice system by clarifying the status of pre-action protocols and reviewing strict liability provisions

David Etherington provides bold and fresh perspectives on the link between welfare policy and employment relations as he assesses their fundamental impact on social inequalities. Exploring how reforms, including Universal Credit, have reinforced employment and social insecurity, he assesses the role of NGOs, trade unions and policymakers in challenging this increasingly work-focused welfare agenda. Drawing on international and national case studies, the book reviews developments, including rising job insecurity, low pay and geographical inequalities, considered integral to neoliberal approaches to social spending. Etherington sets out the possibilities and challenges of alternative approaches and progressive new paths for welfare, the labour market and social rights.

"This book directly addresses the economic development issues central to neighbourhood renewal, drawing on the authors' original research and wide-ranging analysis of recent academic theory and policy practice. Their critical examination of the economic problems of deprived areas, and the range of employment and enterprise-related policy initiatives and governance arrangements that have attempted to address them, offers informed insights into what does and what does not work."--BOOK JACKET.
