The Italian Emblem

  • Categories: Art

The Italian Emblem: A Collection of Essays is the twelfth in the series 'Glasgow Emblem Studies'. This volume is linked to a project for the study and digitization of Italian emblem books held in the Stirling Maxwell Collection (Glasgow), financed by the Sixth EU Framework Programme for activities in the field of research. It aims at exploring the history, forms, themes of the Italian emblem tradition, with particular attention to sixteenth-century emblem books and their open, multifaceted, and metamorphic nature. To capture this nature, the volume includes contributions from different disciplines, ranging from literature to history of art and political philosophy, supplied by the following distinguished scholars: Guido Arbizzoni (University of Urbino 'Carlo Bo'), Monica Calabritto (Hunter College, CUNY), Giuseppe Cascione (University of Bari), Sonia Maffei (University of Bergamo), Anna Maranini (University of Bologna), Liana de Girolami Cheney (University of Massachusetts Lowell), Silvia Volterrani (CTL-Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa). A group of travellers chance to meet, first in a castle, then a tavern. Their powers of speech are magically taken from them and instead they have only tarot cards with which to tell their stories. What follows is an exquisite interlinking of narratives, and a fantastic, surreal and chaotic history of all human consciousness.

The growth of princely states in early Renaissance Italy brought a thorough renewal to the old seats of power. One of the most conspicuous outcomes of this process was the building or rebuilding of new court palaces, erected as prestigious residences in accord with the new ‘classical’ principles of Renaissance architecture. The novelties, however, went far beyond architectural forms: they involved the reorganisation of courtly interiors and their functions, new uses for the buildings, and the relationship between the palaces and their surroundings. The whole urban setting was affected by these processes, and therefore the social, residential and political customs of its inhabitants. This is the focus of A Renaissance Architecture of Power, which aims to analyse from a comparative perspective the evolution of Italian court palaces in the Renaissance in their entirety. Contributors are Silvia Beltramo, Flavia Cantatore, Bianca de Divitiis, Emanuela Ferretti, Marco Folin, Giulio Girondi, Andrea Longhi, Marco Rosario Nobile, Aurora Scotti, Elena Svalduz, and Stefano Zaggia.

Italian Literature: Il tristano panciatichiano

This is the first critical edition with English translation of the prose compilation Tristano panciatichiano, preserved in a unique manuscript in the Biblioteca Nazionale of Florence (MS Panc. 33); it is the first time the Italian text has been published in its entirety in any form. Assembled by the mid-fourteenth century, the manuscript is an original compilation in Italian based on several French models: the Queste del San Graal, Joseph d'Arimathie, the Mort Artu, and notably, the Roman de Tristan en prose. While the edition itself will be of great interest, the translation into English is a major opportunity for Arthurians and other medievalists, and furnishes important new evidence for the study of Arthurian material in Italy. Apparatus includes a finding list of Arthurian manuscripts produced, owned or read by Italians; a select bibliography; and an index of proper names found in the narrative.

Città e guerra : difese, distruzioni, permanenze delle memorie e dell’immagine urbana. Tomo II : tracce e patrimoni
