Ordinary Differential Equations with Applications to Mechanics

This interdisciplinary work creates a bridge between the mathematical and the technical disciplines by providing a strong mathematical tool. The present book is a new, English edition of the volume published in 1999. It contains many improvements, as well as new topics, using enlarged and updated references. Only ordinary differential equations and their solutions in an analytical frame were considered, leaving aside their numerical approach.

Mechanical Systems, Classical Models

As it was already seen in the first volume of the present book, its guideline is precisely the mathematical model of mechanics. The classical models which we refer to are in fact models based on the Newtonian model of mechanics, on its five principles, i. e. : the inertia, the forces action, the action and reaction, the parallelogram and the initial conditions principle, respectively. Other models, e. g. , the model of attraction forces between the particles of a discrete mechanical system, are part of the considered Newtonian model. Kepler’s laws brilliantly verify this model in case of velocities much smaller than the light velocity in vacuum. The non-classical models are relativistic an...

Recent Advances in Engineering Science

The 25th Anniversary Meeting of the Society of Engineering Science was held as a joint conference with the Applied Mechanics Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers at the University of California, Berkeley from June 20-22, 1988. With the encouragement and support of the SES, we decided to organize a symposium in honor of A. C. Eringen: the founding president of the Society of Engineering Science who provided pioneering leadership during the critical first decade of the Society's existence. We felt that there was no better way to do this than with a Symposium on Engineering Science -- the field that A. C. Eringen has devoted his life to. Professor Eringen had the foresight, ...

Ordinary Differential Equations

This book is addressed to all those who, after finishing the high school, wish a practical initiation in the domain of ordinary differential equations and systems. To provide useful tools for (future) engineers, some elementary problems of mechanics are modeled by using ordinary differential equations. The presentation of notions and results is simplified and made graphically attractive, without loosing the mathematical rigor of the results. To increase accessibility and to encourage the reader to get a technical know-how about ordinary differential equations, each newly introduced notion is accompanied by a series of applications and solved problems. Moreover, each chapter ends by a section containing exercises and problems, with hints and answers. The references contain, along with the books, some links with useful sites, which can be helpful for the reader.
