The final volume in this series examines traditional Inuit health practices and beliefs as remembered by both North and South Baffin elders: from treatments for fractures to methods of diagnosis and attitudes towards the injured or ill. Though many practices are described in detail in this book, most of the elders' testimonies are of a more general nature, the main concern being life and consciousness in all their dimensions.
Transsexualism refers to the most extreme form of incongruity between an individual's gender identity and anatomic sex. In 1994, the diagnosis of transsexualism was replaced with ”gender identity disorder" by the DSM-IV committee. Transsexualism is associated with distress because the individual, due to his/her physical characteristics, is not treated as a representative of the gender he/she identifies with and cannot therefore live in a gender role with which he/she identifies. The sexual anatomy of the body also feels alien and inappropriate. Transsexualism that causes distress is treated with sex reassignment therapy. The aim is to alter body characteristics and anatomy closer to those of the target gender as well as to facilitate the integration into the social role of the opposite sex. Investigations and surgery are often only available in specialist centres.
Incorporating Nonbinary Gender into Inuit Archaeology: Oral Testimony and Material Inroads explores gender diversity in precontact Inuit history. By combining evidence from interviews with re-examinations of previously excavated archaeological collections, it challenges binary narratives and creates an allowance for diverse narratives around gender to emerge. This work approaches a wide range of ethnographic and archaeological sources with a critical eye, opening up a dialogue between queer Indigenous studies, LGBTQ2+ Inuit, and archaeology in order to question normative colonial narratives about Indigenous pasts while providing concrete examples of how researchers can begin to let go of rigid assumptions. In this way the reader is encouraged to explore novel perspectives and think beyond boxes to understand gender complexity in precontact Inuit culture. This book has been written for a wide academic audience, particularly those interested in queer archaeologies, archaeologies of gender, decolonial archaeologies, and indigenous archaeologies, and oral history.

Gradually, and somewhat reluctantly, the Canadian government assumed the role of guardian of the Inuit and became involved in their housing, education, employment, and health services. The evolution of government-supported services created problems that are still unmet; the changes in life-style that resulted were exacerbated by unemployment and the Inuit's inferior social and political status. Starting in the 1960's, these complex problems led to increased delinquency, violence, and abuse of alcohol. Duffy shows how the Inuit gradually assumed responsibility for improving their situation, eventually developing the political maturity that found expression in the Inuit Tapirisat of Canada, its affiliated organizations, and the pressure for regional self-determination.
