By accident, the world-famous brewery Carlsberg became a central force in global marine science during the first three decades of the 20th century. Within a core group of scientists and managers, Johannes Schmidt (1877-1933) was the key figure combining the efforts of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), the Danish state and several private companies. Launching 26 oceangoing expeditions Schmidt made landmark discoveries such as the breeding ground for the Atlantic eel in the Sargasso Sea. The scientific frontier was pushed literally kilometres into the deep sea and across the World’s oceans. While the formal North Atlantic Empire of the small state of Denmark was in decline, an informal empire of science was erected instead. Shortlisted for the Society for Nautical Research Anderson Medal for published works on Maritime History in 2016.

HE history of high-altitude physiology and medicine is such a rich and T colorful topic that it is perhaps surprising that no one has undertaken a comprehensive account before. There are so many interesting ramifications, from the early balloonists to the various high-altitude expeditions, culminating in the great saga of climbing Mt. Everest without supplementary oxygen. Underpinning this variety is the basic biological challenge of hypoxia and the ways organisms adapt to it, a subject that is of key importance in medicine and many other life sciences, encountered as it is by organisms throughout the animal kingdom. I hope that this book will be of interest to a wide range of people, from b...

This is the story of Carola Rossmann, a middle-aged widow who is left behind with her elderly mother and former housekeeper as others of her family leave. They promise her she will follow them as soon as needed documents can be obtained. With the onset of World War II, her situation changes. She is ultimately abandoned inside Germany to face her own fate. In this setting, Carola establishes a dangerous relationship with a gentile man that provides her respite, comfort, and even pleasure. The tortuous path she embarks on results in a corrosive conflict created by the paradox of her Aryan appearance and her Jewish soul. The relentless acts of dehumanization alternately raise and dash her hopes during her last years in the city. When Jewish life is finally brought to a halt, the entire community is trapped in place and deported. The SS robs them of their belongings and uses their own assets to exterminate them. With few exceptions all of this takes place while the citizenry stands by, unwilling to interfere with the atrocities they are witnessing.

God, Greed, and Genocide

What are the similarities between the mass extermination of idolaters in the Old Testament, the burning of witches in the Middle Ages, the extermination of native Americans, the mass killing of the Armenians at the hand of the Turks, the Holo- caust of the European Jews, and the communist eradication of the enemies of the people both in the Soviet Union and Cambodia? Are these to be seen as unique cases, or as the result of a recognizable pattern. The author provides insight into these questions, basing his argument on the latest sources. He maintains that the study of the dynamics that lead to mass destruction may provide a better understanding of the holocaust as a recurrent phenomenon.

Effect of Observer Elevation on the Moon Illusion

A study was made to determine if an increase in elevation of an observer above terrain causes a change in the magnitude of the moon illusion and estimation of distance upon terrain. A comparison was made to determine a relationship between the magnitude of the illusion at different observer elevations and the corresponding estimation of distance. It was found that a general decrease in the magnitude of the moon illusion coincides with a general increase in estimated distance when an observer ascends from a point above a terrain. Evidence is lacking to support the apparent-distance theory when an observer ascends above terrain.
