Studi Kasus Amsel Stad Amsterdam Integral Metode Desain Ruang Publik

Coney Island

For almost 100 years, Coney Island was the most popular seaside destination in the United States. Eachyear, millions escaped the heat of New York City to savor the thrills of the Cyclone roller coaster and Wonder Wheel at the Astroland amusement park. They came to sample an original Nathan's Famous hot dog, witness the first demolition derby, or to take a chance at a game of three-card Monte on the legendary boardwalk. The advent of air-conditioning, concerns about Coney's "tawdry" entertainment, and faster transportation to other beaches hastened the demise of what had become a uniquely American icon of entertainment and a defining terminus of New York at the water's edge. In an effort to r...

The Functional City

Dutch architect Cornelis van Eesteren served as president of CIAM from 1930 to 1947. This volume about Cornelis van Eesteren (1897-1988) and CIAM fills a hiatus in the existing literature. The main focus is CIAM's legendary fourth congress about 'The Functional City', which was held in the summer of 1933 and chaired by Van Eesteren. There is special consideration for the underexposed but vital contribution of the Dutch CIAM group and the town planner Cornelis van Eesteren. The leitmotif in this narrative is the principle of collectivity: the avant-garde ideal of concerted action as the basis for the creation of a thoroughly contemporary human habitat. The evolution of CIAM is traced using th...

Amsterdam faces a major challenge in terms of the transition of public space in the coming years. A transition driven by climate change, the switch to sustainable sources of energy, the increasing scarcity of raw materials, and the digitalization of society. In addition, the city is growing steadily and increasing in density. Infrastructure below ground is growing apace, but space is running out. If current methods of city and area development remain unchanged, the transition will stagnate. In new development schemes the traditional idea of thinking from above ground to below ground is a thing of the past. Prioritizing underground space and the multiple use of space, the design method introd...

BiodiverCITY - a Matter of Vital Soil!

This publication represents a quest for biodiversity in the city. Declining biodiversity in the countryside has been in the spotlight for years. Healthy soil life is of vital importance. Biodiversity in the city appears to be hidden. How do you design a public space that is anchored in healthy soil? There is a world full of life beneath our feet. Hidden in the soil, up to 100 million species of micro-organisms work together with fungi and plant roots to form networks that ensure a healthy living environment. Without soil, we cannot survive. Yet we treat our living environment inattentively. The growing world population is moving to cities, annexing surrounding areas and literally squeezing t...

Michel de Klerk

Michel De Klerk, who died young, was the leader of the Amsterdam School, the expressionist movement in Dutch architecture of the second and third decades of this century. In two essays and an extensive catalogue Sigrid Johannisse and Vladimir Stissi have analyzed De Klerk's designs and shed light on their genesis. In addition, they place De Klerk and his work in the context of the Amsterdam architecture of the first decades of the century, as well as the national and international one. Furthermore, they demonstrate De Klerk's contribution to the development of the task of public housing in the urgban space, with the famous blocks on the Spaarndammerplantsoen in Amsterdam as high point. In an introduction, Manfred Bock describes the complicated art historical reception of De Klerk's work and the interest in one of the most extraordinary Dutch architects of the twentieth century.

Civil Art

In a polemical essay, Vincent van Rossem sketches the post-war history of architecture and urban planning. During and after the disintegration of the Modern Movement in the 1950s and 1960s, a number of books and essays dealing with the architecture-city relationship were published. Since then much of that formal theorizing has filtered through to day-to-day practice, resulting in a modification of the rigid principles of functionalist urban design. The author describes these developments and shows - taking The Resident as a concrete example - how criticism of the architecture and urban design fostered by the Modern Movement has led to a different approach to urban renewal.

Meyer en Van Schooten Architects: Ing Group Headquarters

The headquarters of the ING Group in Amsterdam is one of the most spectacular buildings of our time. Even before construction began, the design by Roberto Meyer and Jeroen van Schooten had etched itself into the public consciousness, immediately attracting such nicknames as the shoe, the handyvac and the TGV. The ING head office is more than just an eye-catching form. This is only one aspect of the complex unity of form, space, construction, technique and detail achieved by this architecture. This book takes in-depth cognisance of this extraordinary building, from its mind-boggling structure and perfect detailing to its wealth of ambiences and spatiality. The architects themselves provide a well-founded and precisely detailed description of how their architecture fits together, and why this is so. Plans, sections and a great many details complete this building monograph together with stunning photographs from George Fessy.

I Swear I Use No Art at All

This book displays and dissects the career and design motives of graphic designer Joost Grootens. In a systematic fashion it charts the first 100 books designed by Grootens over the past ten years. In the first chapter, '10 years', Grootens uses timelines, lists and graphs to map the course of his career as a designer, the people he worked with and the places where the work took place. In '100 books', the designer dissects his book designs. He details the grids, formats, paper stocks, colours and typefaces, and charts the books' structures and compositions. '18,788 pages' shows at actual size a selection of spreads from books designed by Grootens, including the internationally acclaimed atlases. In the text 'I swear I use no art at all' Joost Grootens gives a personal account of making books and the ideas behind his designs.
