Op 1 april 1971 verscheen de allereerste Oor. Barend Toet, een vierentwintigjarige student politieke wetenschappen uit Amsterdam-Noord, was de man die Nederland zijn eigen Rolling Stone wilde geven. Al snel groeide het blad uit tot een waar icoon; iedereen die iets betekende in de muziekwereld streefde naar een plek in het tijdschrift. Nu, veertig jaar na de geboorte van Oor, beschrijft Barend Toet het eerste decennium van het lijfblad van velen, en beschouwt de periode daarna in een breder perspectief.
