Op 1 april 1971 verscheen de allereerste Oor. Barend Toet, een vierentwintigjarige student politieke wetenschappen uit Amsterdam-Noord, was de man die Nederland zijn eigen Rolling Stone wilde geven. Al snel groeide het blad uit tot een waar icoon; iedereen die iets betekende in de muziekwereld streefde naar een plek in het tijdschrift. 'Als het maar keihard en swingend is,' was het motto van de redactie. Nu, veertig jaar na de geboorte van Oor, beschrijft Barend Toet het eerste decennium van het lijfblad van velen, en beschouwt de periode daarna in een breder perspectief. Als geen ander is hij in staat een intiem beeld van die opwindende begintijd te schetsen, toen de afstand tussen popschrijvers en sterren als Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Steven Stills en Robbie Robertson nog klein was. Keihard & Swingend is het persoonlijk verhaal van Barend Toet, gelardeerd met humor en zijn eigenzinnige visie op popjournalistiek, waarbij de liefde voor muziek van elke pagina spat.

De Optimist is het meest vooraanstaande online culturele magazine in Nederland: positief, toegankelijk, maar zonder het experiment te schuwen en zonder gebaande paden te betreden. Handboek voor een Optimistisch leven bevat werk van 70 schrijvers en illustratoren, zowel werk dat speciaal voor deze uitgave is gemaakt als een selectie uit de verhalen, gedichten, essays en illustraties die verschenen op de website De Optimist.
