Lodz and Getto Litzmannstadt : promised land and croaking hole of Europe
From 1941 to 1944, the Polish Jewish photographer Henryk Ross (1910-1991) was a member of an official team documenting the implementation of Nazi policies in the Lodz Ghetto in Poland. Covertly, he captured on film scores of both quotidian and intimate moments of Jewish life. In 1944, he buried thousands of negatives in an attempt to save this secret record. After the war, Ross returned to Poland to retrieve them. Although some were destroyed by nature and time, many negatives survived. Memory Unearthed presents a selection of the nearly 3,000 surviving images-along with original prints and other archival material including curfew notices and newspapers-from the permanent collection at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Ross's images offer a startling and moving new representation of one of humanity's greatest tragedies. Striking for both their historical content and artistic quality, his photographs have a raw intimacy and emotional power that remain undiminished.

"¿Qué hacer entonces? —se pregunta de inmediato el que se enfrenta desde distintos lugares a este fenómeno, tan antiguo de hecho como el propio vínculo que constituye al grupo escolar. Ya sea desde el lugar del enseñante, del familiar, del acosador o del acosado, la pregunta debe empezar a abordarse por la negativa. En primer lugar, se trata de desvictimizar a la victima, de devolverle su condición de sujeto allí donde participa, sin saberlo y sin quererlo, de la lógica del grupo en la que se juegan las identificaciones de sus tres lugares estructurales. Lo que quiere decir también entonces interrogar a los otros dos lugares en su condición de sujetos del goce: al acosador en su demanda de amor-odio, al observador en la satisfacción que lo confirma como parte integrante de la escena. Digamos para concluir que la tarea pedagógica y la tarea mediadora encontrarán siempre aquí un límite: en lo imposible de educar el goce y en lo imposible de mediar entre el sujeto y el objeto de ese goce. Será siempre necesario interrogar a cada uno, fuera del vínculo grupal, sobre aquello que lo mantiene atado a lo más innombrable de su objeto."
