Meanings and Functions of the Ruler's Image in the Mediterranean World (11th – 15th Centuries)

The book proposes a reassessment of royal portraiture and its function in the Middle Ages via a comparative analysis of works from different areas of the Mediterranean world, where images are seen as only one outcome of wider and multifarious strategies for the public mise-en-scène of the rulers’ bodies. Its emphasis is on the ways in which medieval monarchs in different areas of the Mediterranean constructed their outward appearance and communicated it by means of a variety of rituals, object-types, and media. Dystopias of Infamy
Insults, scorn, and verbal abuse—frequently deployed to affirm the social identity of the insulter—are destined to fail when that language is appropriated and embraced by the maligned group. In such circumstances, slander may instead empower and reinforce the collective identity of those perceived to be a threat to an idealized society. In this innovative study, Irigoyen-Garcia examines how the discourse and practices of insult and infamy shaped the cultural imagination, anxieties, and fantasies of early modern Spain. Drawing on sixteenth- and seventeenth-century literary works, archival research, religious and political literature, and iconographic documents, Dystopias of Infamy traces how the production of insults haunts the imaginary of power, provoking latent anxieties about individual and collective resistance to subjectification. Of particular note is Cervantes’s tendency to parody regulatory fantasies about infamy throughout his work, lampooning repressive law for its paradoxical potential to instigate the very defiance it fears.
La pintura sobre tabla del gótico lineal
Este libro trata de la pintura sobre tabla del gótico lineal catalán, tanto la realizada para los condados catalanes integrados en la Corona de Aragón como para los condados pertenecientes al llamado Reino de Mallorca, del cual formaban parte la Cerdaña, el Conflent, el Rosellón y otros condados de la zona norte de la Cataluña medieval, además de la isla de Mallorca. Es la primera ocasión que se realiza un estudio global de las pinturas de la primera mitad del siglo XIV, y se replantean diversas cuestiones generales sobre las que hasta ahora se han admitido hipótesis tradicionales que conviene revisar. Entre los aspectos generales tratados están: el origen del modelo plástico de dichas pinturas, los centros de producción y la cuestión de los talleres pictóricos, la relación de la pintura mural y la pintura sobre tabla, el patronazgo, etc.

Sephardim and Ashkenazim
Sephardic and Ashkenazic Judaism have long been studied separately. Yet, scholars are becoming ever more aware of the need to merge them into a single field of Jewish Studies. This volume opens new perspectives and bridges traditional gaps. The authors are not simply contributing to their respective fields of Sephardic or Ashkenazic Studies. Rather, they all include both Sephardic and Ashkenazic perspectives as they reflect on different aspects of encounters and reconsider traditional narratives. Subjects range from medieval and early modern Sephardic and Ashkenazic constructions of identities, influences, and entanglements in the fields of religious art, halakhah, kabbalah, messianism, and charity to modern Ashkenazic Sephardism and Sephardic admiration for Ashkenazic culture. For reasons of coherency, the contributions all focus on European contexts between the fourteenth and the nineteenth centuries.
