Las políticas de la memoria se han convertido en un nuevo campo de batalla político y cultural. Aunque esto muestra la vitalidad de las democracias contemporáneas, al mismo tiempo invita a una reflexión crítica sobre el modo como la memoria histórica está alimentando la polarización y dificultando los grandes consensos sociales. al discutir hechos históricos de un pasado que no pasa en países como China, Turquía, Estados Unidos, España, Islanda del Norte, Colombia, Sudáfrica, Rusia, Francia, Japón, Chile y Alemania, Iván Garzón Vallejo pone en presente que existen múltiples formas de abordar el pasado, pero inguna de ellas está exenta de tensiones y decisiones trágicas sobre qué recordar y qué olvidar. Y así como los ciudadanos tenemos derecho a la verdad del pasado, tenemos también el deber de imaginar y tejer el futuro en el horizonte de la reconciliación y la justicia.
