Development of Auditory and Vestibular Systems

Development of Auditory and Vestibular Systems fourth edition presents a global and synthetic view of the main aspects of the development of the stato-acoustic system. Unique to this volume is the joint discussion of two sensory systems that, although close at the embryological stage, present divergences during development and later reveal conspicuous functional differences at the adult stage. This work covers the development of auditory receptors up to the central auditory system from several animal models, including humans. Coverage of the vestibular system, spanning amphibians to effects of altered gravity during development in different species, offers examples of the diversity and compl...

Student Consumer Culture in Nineteenth-Century Oxford

This book explores students’ consumer practices and material desires in nineteenth-century Oxford. Consumerism surged among undergraduates in the 1830s and decreased by contrast from the 1860s as students learned to practice restraint and make wiser choices, putting a brake on past excessive consumption habits. This study concentrates on the minority of debtors, the daily lives of undergraduates, and their social and economic environment. It scrutinises the variety of goods that were on offer, paying special attention to their social and symbolic uses and meanings. Through emulation and self-display, undergraduate culture impacted the formation of male identities and spending habits. Using Oxford students as a case study, this book opens new pathways in the history of consumption and capitalism, revealing how youth consumer culture intertwined with the rise of competition among tradesmen and university reforms in the 1850s and 1860s.

The Neurology of Eye Movements

"lt is a tremendous achievement to have provided this highly comprehensive but readable text, which informs such a large group of researchers and clinicians." Christopher Kennard, PhD, FRCP, FMedSci, Professor of Clinical Neurology, Head, Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences, University of Oxford, John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, United Kingdom. "A monograph written with deep knowledge, understanding, wisdom, clarity, intelligibility - the superlatives could go on and on... A remarkable achievement and a great gift to all of us from the two modern giants of eye movement disorders." Michael Halmagyi, MD, Eye and Ear Research Unit, Neurology Department, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, The University of Sydney, Australia. "The fifth edition of The Neurology of Eye Movements is a must for all neurologists and neuroscientists interested in how the human vestibular and oculomotor systems adapt to movement in space and to optimally viewing the world and its contents." Most biological reactions and functions occur within a narrow range of pH. Any changes in the pH have great impacts on the biological functional at every level, including protein folding, enzymatic activities and proliferation and cell death. Therefore, maintain the pH homeostasis at the local or systemic level is one of the highest priorities for all multicellular organisms. Many redundant mechanisms are in place to maintain the pH homeostasis, a topic that is well covered in the scientific literature and medical textbooks. However, when the pH homeostasis is disrupted in various physiological adaptations and pathological situations, resulting acidity may trigger significant pathophysiologi...
