Huge periods in the history of art have been inspired by the work of earlier generations; all the neos: neo-Gothic, neoclassicism, neo-Romanticism and so forth, have connected themselves with artists of the past. Great masters have inspired others for hundreds of years they created schools dedicated to their work and their artistic styles were copied. Though this rarely happens in the present day art world, the Norwegian expressionist painter Edvard Munch has continued to have a direct influence on artists the world over. In celebration of Munch's 150th anniversary the Haugar Vestfold Kunstmuseum is exhibiting Munch By Others, looking at artworks created by artists over the past 30 years. Featuring an amazing amount of contemporary works by Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe, Marina Abramovic, Tracey Emin, Georg Baselitz and many, many more.

Published to coincide with the major exhibition at the Royal Academy, London, November 2020 - February 2021 Tracey Emin (b. 1963) has long said that Edvard Munch (1863-1944) was the artist who had inspired her the most. In her formative years as an artist, it was the expressionism of Munch's paintings and his uncompromising will to explore the complexity and vulnerability of the human condition that attracted her. This book sheds light on the impact of Munch's art on Emin's artistic approach and her expressive repertoire in paintings, sculptures, textiles and neons. It explores the themes of grief, longing and loneliness, especially related to the ageing process and childlessness. This highlights the similarity between the two artists, as well as the difference between a female and male approach to difficult subjects related to the darker side of human existence, which has changed dramatically from the 20th century until today.

Tracey Emin CBE RA describes Edvard Munch as her 'hero'. Her relationship with the Norwegian painter goes back to the very beginning of her career: 'I've been in love with this man since I was eighteen', she says. In this exhibition at the Royal Academy and the Munch Museet, Oslo, her works will appear alongside those of the Expressionist master. A handsome accompanying catalogue, produced by the Munch Museum, Oslo, reproduces both artists' works in stunning detail and includes thought-provoking essays by Kari J.Brandtzaeg and Rudi Fuchs and an interview between Emin and Edith and Edith Devaney, in which Emin identifies the formal and emotional elements in Munch's work that have proved such an inspiration.
