The Honourable Ladies

Biteback Publishing is delighted to announce a major new project, a two volume series of biographies of every female MP ever to be elected to the House of Commons. When Constance Markievicz stood for election as MP for Dublin St Patrick's in 1918, few people believed she could win the seat – yet she did. A breakthrough in the bitter struggle for female enfranchisement had come earlier that year, followed by a second landmark piece of legislation allowing women to be elected to Parliament – and Markievicz duly became the first woman MP. A member of Sinn Féin, she refused to take her seat. She did, however, pave the way for future generations, and only eleven months later, Nancy Astor ent...

Jacqui Smith

This report concerns the investigation by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards into two complaints against Jacqui Smith, the MP for Redditch. The complaints were that Ms Smith had: (1) wrongly designated her main home for the purposes of claiming Additional Costs Allowance (ACA) in respect of her second home; (2) had claimed against ACA for the cost of films viewed on cable television at her second home. The Commissioner concludes that Ms Smith was in breach of the rules over the designation of her main home from 2004 to 2009, and that she should have designated her constituency home as her main home rather than the house she shared with her sister and her sister's partner in London. The Committee supports this finding, though noting the mitigating circumstances of Ms Smith taking advice from the House authorities in 2007. The Committee recommends that Ms Smith apologise to the House through a personal statement. On the second complaint, the Committee welcomes Ms Smith's admission of error and regards her repayment of a sum in excess of that wrongly claimed as sufficient to close the matter.

A member of Sinn Féin, she refused to take her seat. She did, however, pave the way for future generations, and only eleven months later, Nancy Astor entered the Commons. A century on from that historic event, 491 women have now passed through the hallowed doors of Parliament....

Toward a General Theory of Expertise

During the last twenty years our understanding of expertise has dramatically increased. Laboratory analysis of chess masters, experts in physics and medicine, musicians, athletics, writers, and performance artists have included careful examination of the cognitive processes mediating outstanding performance in very diverse areas of expertise. These analyses have shown that expert performance is primarily a reflection of acquired skill resulting from the accumulation of domain-specific knowledge and methods during many years of training practice. The importance of domain-specific knowledge has led researchers on expertise to focus on characteristics of expertise in specific domains. In Toward...
