Missionary Work in Africa in Eugène Casalis’s Time and Beyond

British influence on what was to become the British Empire and French influence on French speaking Africa have been extensively explored so far, but few books focus on French missions in Britain’s sphere of influence. The French missionary Eugène Casalis represents a perhaps unique experience of a man taking part in the nation-building process in an African country, Lesotho, which belonged to London’s ‘reserve’. Casalis was to become the King’s special advisor and is still hailed today as one of the few men who built the country. Based on the research of a dozen African and European academics who convened in Morija in 2012 to commemorate the bicentenary of that great Protestant humanist and to analyse “Missionary Work in Africa in Eugene Casalis’s Time and Beyond”, this book will provide fresh and stimulating material for readers interested in colonial and post-colonial studies, missions and religion, and cultural and historical exchanges between the Southern part of the African continent and Great Britain.

Explorations in Southern African Drama, Theatre and Performance

In spite of the rich repertoire of artistic traditions in Southern Africa, particularly in the areas of drama, theatre and performance, there seems to be a lack of a corresponding robust academic engagement with these subjects. While it can be said that some of the racial groups in the region have received substantial attention in terms of scholarly discussions of their drama and theatre performances, the same cannot be said of the black African racial group. The topics covered in the b...

"Set in an unnamed African country, Shattered Calabash is at one and the same time a drama of marital conflict and an expose of corruption in government circles." "The wife and son of a high-ranking official discover, first, that he is a serial adulterer and second, that he has been siphoning off the national wealth and depositing this in European accounts." "Conflict is inevitable. The dialogue through which that conflict is carried out is frank and often funny. Tunde Fatunda has produced a drama that has much to say about misgovernment and about the continuing exploitation of Africa by western interests."--BOOK JACKET.

Human Rights and Technological Change
