James Connolly

James Connolly (1868-1916) became a leading Irish socialist and revolutionary, and was one of the leaders of Ireland's rebellion in 1916. As a youth he had served in the British army in Ireland and, seeing how they treated the local population, became hugely disillusioned with the British Army. He became involved in socialism in Scotland and was the driving force behind the creation of Ireland's trade union movement. He was Commandant of the Dublin Brigade in the Easter Rising and, too injured to stand before the firing squad, was executed tied to a chair. Written in an entertaining, educational and assessible style, this biography is an accurate and well-researched portrayal of the man behind the uprising. Including the latest archival evidence, James Connolly is part of the Sixteen Lives series which looks at the events, lives and deeds of the sixteen men executed for their role in Ireland's Easter 1916 Rising.

James Connolly was a prolific writer of books, tracts, articles and essays, and conducted a voluminous correspondence with ideological friends and foes of every persuasion. This selection of just over 100 previously uncollected articles and essays is arranged into six sections, corresponding to the journals in which they originally appeared: The Workers Republic; The Socialist; The Harp; The Irish Worker; The Worker; and The Workers Republic (1915-1916). Each section is prefaced with a brief historical context, and explanatory footnotes are included throughout. The introduction provides a biographical sketch of the man and his times and an account of the tangled history of the posthumous publication of Connolly's work - providing a mirror of developments in the Irish labour movement since Connolly's death.

Executed by a British firing squad on 12th May 1916 for his role in organizing the Easter Rising, James Connolly was one of the most prominent radical organizers and agitators of his day. As a labour organiser, Connolly stressed the importance of direct action, broad working-class unity, and a commitment to ending labor's exploitation. As a socialist agitator, Connolly saw economic and political independence as inextricably intertwined. This pamphlet, the first graphic treatment of Connolly's life, is issued on the centenary of the Easter Rising.
