Drawing on many oral and unpublished written accounts from veterans of the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Phil Nordyke brings the history of the regiment to life, conveying with remarkable immediacy and power what it was like to be there. This is history as it was lived by the men of the 504th, from their pre-war coming of age in the regiment, through the end of World War II, when they marched in the Victory Parade down Fifth Avenue in New York. The 504th earned three bronze stars for their parachute wings, one for each of their combat jumps.

Shadows in the Rye

SHADOWS IN THE RYE I suppose that superstition knows no boundaries. Whether you live on the East Coast, the West Coast or in between, somewhere in a small village, you will find a Witch, an overzealous Police Inspector, and many people who are afraid of both. I was born in such a town but my family moved to a large city on the coast. Every year I spent a good part of my summer vacation with my cousins at my birthplace. I like you to meet the Witch, who so many people were afraid of, and the Inspector who I regarded to be a bully, rather than an officer of the law. He thought of himself as an example of perfection and he was perhaps the most feared person in town. His name is Lans Dillen and many young kid had a run with him. Bennie¿s house was on High Street and you often could see her peeping at anyone passing by, through a crack in her dirty curtain. I was not afraid of her, but something about her that gave me the creeps whenever I saw her. Like it still is today in many small towns tucked away in rural areas, this town had its secrets. Do not judge the characters to hastily, as you will find out that anyone could be the bad guy, or the good guy. Jan Bos.

A Radical's Books

The library owned by Samuel Jeake of Rye, nonconformist and local activist, was one of the most remarkable of its time. It is of particular importance in that relatively little information has hitherto been available about the ownership of books in the English provinces, or the reading habits of intellectuals who -- like Jeake --were outside London and university circles from which most surviving libraries have come down to us. The collection of some 1500 volumes includes an extraordinary assemblage of radical pamphlets from the English Revolution alongside works of theology, literature, scholarship and science. Other books reflect astrological and magical interests, and the collection also ...

The late D. F. McKenzie worked on this comprehensive edition of the works of the playwright, poet, librettist, and novelist William Congreve for more than twenty years, until his sudden death in 1999. This was a task he had taken over from Herbert Davis, to whom this edition is dedicated. During that time McKenzie uncovered new verse and letters, collated Congreve's texts, recorded their complicated textual history, constructed appendices that shed light on the dramatic context in which Congreve worked, and examined how his contemporaries received Congreve's work. More importantly, McKenzie has convincingly re-evaluated Congreve's works and life to transform our image of the man and his repu...
