The Dutch Response To HIV
The Netherlands' response to AIDS is widely regarded as well organized and effective. This is largely due to the timely response to the threat of the disease, with a prevention programme starting in 1982. This Dutch example provides an instructive case study for other countries with relevance for policy makers now and in the future. The book documents and discusses Dutch prevention policy: most specifically the prevention policies and activities for various target groups; the focus on prevention research and studies on sexuality and health behaviour; and the emphasis on individual responsibility.

Controlling Time and Shaping the Self
This book explores new questions and approaches to the rise of autobiographical writing since the early modern period. What motivated more and more men and women to write records of their private life? How could private writing grow into a bestselling genre? How was this rapidly expanding genre influenced by new ideas about history that emerged around 1800? How do we explain the paradox of the apparent privacy of publicity in many autobiographies? Such questions are addressed with reference to well-known autobiographies and an abundance of newfound works by persons hitherto unknown, not only from Europe, but also the Near East, and Japan. This volume features new views of the complex field of historical autobiography studies, and is the first to put the genre in a global perspective.

The Age of the ΔΡΟΜΩΝ
This volume examines the development and evolution of the war galley known as the Dromon, and its relative, the Chelandion, from first appearance in the sixth century until its supercession in the twelfth century by the Galea developed in the Latin West. Beginning as a small, fully-decked, monoreme galley, by the tenth century the Dromon had become a bireme, the pre-eminent war galley of the Mediterranean. The salient features of these ships were their two-banked oarage system, the spurs at their bows which replaced the ram of classical antiquity, their lateen sails, and their primary weapon: Greek Fire. The book contextualizes the technical characteristics of the ships within the operational history of Byzantine fleets, logistical problems of medieval naval warfare, and strategic objectives. Surviving Byzantine sources, especially tactical manuals, are subjected to close literary and philological analysis.

Les premières fouilles archéologiques furent entreprises à Sinope entre 1951 et 1953. Des travaux ponctuels ont ensuite été menés, mais ce n'est qu'au début des années 90 que Sinope a connu un regain d'intérêt et que l'activité archéologique s'est développée à l'échelle internationale, avec tout d'abord les fouilles des ateliers amphoriques, puis divers programmes terrestres et sous-marins. Les Actes du Symposium international rassemblent les résultats de ces travaux, ainsi que les recherches consacrées à l'histoire de cette ville, depuis sa fondation jusqu'à la période seldjoukide, à ses productions artisanales, à son commerce et à ses relations avec le reste de la mer Noire.
