Dr. Mario C. Barbiere and Jane C. Wiatr have developed a practical and informative guide to teaching for both new and seasoned teachers, administrators and their support staff. This book spotlights The Student Empowerment Program© and is the foundation for a positive climate and culture in the early childhood classroom. The program is detailed chapter by chapter and addresses the nature of the learner from play and exploration to technology, to rubrics and assessments. This covers the gamut of what every educator needs to know to become a master in their field. The Student Empowerment Program© contains the 5’R’s which is the architecture a teacher needs to build a solid foundation for learning and self-regulation. Any educator, who wants to make a positive change and become enabled to teach more and discipline less, will appreciate the simplicity of our program in this step by step handbook. Every word, whether it is our personal experience or research based is dedicated to facilitating a smooth transition toward positive discipline, student self-regulation and student empowerment.

Fifteen years after the fall of communism, we are able to appraise the results of the multi-faceted postcommunist transition in Central and Eastern Europe with authority. This volume specifically addresses the fascinating area of Civil-Military relations throughout this transitional period. The countries of the region inherited a onerous legacy in this area: their armed forces were part of the communist party-state system and most were oriented towards Cold War missions; they were large in size and supported by high levels of defence spending; and they were based on universal male conscription. Central and eastern European states have thus faced a three fold civil-military reform challenge: ...
One of the most unexpected outcomes of the Soviet bloc's transition out of communism has been the divergent but important paths followed by once ruling communist parties. In Poland, Hungary, and Lithuania those parties transformed themselves into pro-Western free market center leftists who have won elections and formed governing coalitions periodically since the early 1990s. The result has been former communists leading their countries into NATO and the EU even as their conservative opponents continue to condemn them for their communist past. No less surprising has been the ability of anti-Western neo-Leninist communist parties in Russia and Ukraine to win sizable pluralities of votes in fre...
This book aims to help teachers and those who support them to re-imagine the work of teaching, learning and leading. In particular, it shows how transformations of educational practice depend on complementary transformations in classroom-school- and system-level organisational cultures, resourcing and politics. It argues that transforming education requires more than professional development to transform teachers; it also calls for fundamental changes in learning and leading practices, which in turn means reshaping organisations that support teachers and teaching – organisational cultures, the resources organisations provide and distribute, and the relationships that connect people with one another in organisations. The book is based on findings from new research being conducted by the authors – the research team for the (2010-2012) Australian Research Council-funded Discovery Project Leading and Learning: Developing Ecologies of Educational Practice.
