Rudolf Eickemeyer, Jr. began his work as a photographer in 1884, for his father's engineering firm. His interest piqued, he rapidly advanced to portraiture and landscape photography. Eickemeyer spent twenty years as a commercial success in his role as fashionable Fifth Avenue portraitist. Working with Eastman Kodak, he demystified photography, attracting thousands of amateurs. Eickemeyer excelled at both artistic photography and professional photography, as this exhibition attests. A lifelong resident of Yonkers, New York, Eickemeyer played a key role in the creation of the Yonkers Museum of Science and Art, the institutional forerunner of the Hudson River Museum, an entirely appropriate venue for this comprehensive exhibition and catalog.

Archaeological Investigations in a Northern Albanian Province
"This work, presented in two volumes, is focused on the province of Shkodër in northern Albania. It is the first synthetic archaeological treatment of this region and is based on five years of field and laboratory work. Some of the earliest and largest hillforts and tumuli (burial mounds) in Albania, dating to the Bronze and Iron Age, are located in Shkodër, and this region is important to ongoing archaeological debates regarding the origins of inequality and the rise of social complexity. Volume 1 includes geological context, a literature review, historical background, and reports on the regional survey and test excavations at three settlements and three tumuli. In Volume 2, the authors describe the artifacts recovered through survey and excavation, including chipped stone, small finds, and pottery from the prehistoric, Classical, Roman, medieval, and post-medieval periods. They also present results of faunal, petrographic, chemical, carpological, and strontium isotope analyses of the artifacts"--
Likeness and Landscape

Burning with Desire
In an 1828 letter to his partner, Nicéphore Niépce, Louis Daguerre wrote, "I am burning with desire to see your experiments from nature." In this book, Geoffrey Batchen analyzes the desire to photograph as it emerged within the philosophical and scientific milieus that preceded the actual invention of photography. Recent accounts of photography's identity tend to divide between the postmodern view that all identity is determined by context and a formalist effort to define the fundamental characteristics of photography as a medium. Batchen critiques both approaches by way of a detailed discussion of photography's conception in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He examines the output of the various nominees for "first photographer," then incorporates this information into a mode of historical criticism informed by the work of Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida. The result is a way of thinking about photography that persuasively accords with the medium's undeniable conceptual, political, and historical complexity.
