Aquest assaig clàssic sobre la implantació i la repressió del franquisme al País Valencià, però també sobre els primers intents de normalització i modernització de les nostres lletres, va guanyar l'any següent de la seua primera edició el Premi de la Crítica dels Escriptors Valencians. Es tracta d'una aproximació històrica i literària molt ben documentada sobre el fosc període de la postguerra. Els escriptors i els protagonistes de la reanimació dels anys trenta havien estat emmudits: l'exili, la presó, la censura i les execucions són algunes de les formes més conegudes de repressió que va imposar el Generalísimo. A més d'això, al nostre país es produeix una subtil desviació de la tradició, que l'autor designa com un procés de folklorització. Malgrat aquests mecanismes de depuració, aviat apareix tota una sèrie d'intents de represa de la nostra cultura. Si bé la literatura es mou i s'explica en termes de resistència i clandestinitat, a partir del final de la dècada dels quaranta s'ha de fer referència a un primer moviment seriós en el camp de la infraestructura cultural.

"Arte en tiempos de guerra" fue el tema de investigación propuesto en las XIV Jornadas Internacionales de Historia del Arte, celebradas en el Centro de Ciencias Humanas y Sociales del CSIC en 2008. En esta edición se presentaron un amplio abanico de investigaciones centradas en el desarrollo artístico en tiempos bélicos, que constatan la imposibilidad del arte de escapar de su contexto, lo que hace que éste haya acusado fuertemente las situaciones de guerra y los conflictos socio-políticos. Se aborda por tanto, el modo en que la guerra ha afectado, en general, al arte, al artista y al patrimonio.
