Atmosphere and Aesthetics
This book provides a presentation of the concept of “atmosphere” in the realm of aesthetics. An “atmosphere” is meant to be an emotional space. Such idea of “atmosphere” has been more and more subsumed by human and social sciences in the last twenty years, thereby becoming a technical notion. In many fields of the Humanities, affective life has been reassessed as a proper tool to understand the human being, and is now considered crucial. In this context, the link between atmospheres and aesthetics becomes decisive. Nowadays, aesthetics is no longer only a theory of art, but has recovered its original vocation: to be a general theory of perception conceived of as an ordinary experience of pre-logical character. In its four parts (Atmospheric turn?, Senses and Spaces, Subjects and Communities, Aesthetics and Art Theory), this volume discusses whether atmospheres could take the prominent and paradigmatic position previously held by art in order to make sense of such sensible experience of the world.
Toward an Anthropology of Ambient Sound
This volume approaches the issue of ambient sound through the ethnographic exploration of different cultural contexts including Italy, India, Egypt, France, Ethiopia, Scotland, Spain, Portugal, and Japan. It examines social, religious, and aesthetic conceptions of sound environments, what types of action or agency are attributed to them, and what bodies of knowledge exist concerning them. Contributors shed new light on these sensory environments by focusing not only on their form and internal dynamics, but also on their wider social and cultural environment. L'ambiance participe bel et bien de ce qui fait un monde, de ce qui lui donne chair et lui confère un visage. Il en va des atmosphères sensibles qui colorent nos milieux de vie, modulent nos manières d'habiter et contribuent à nos façons de faire société. En quête d'ambiances conjugue réflexion théorique, proposition méthodologique et investigation de terrain. L'ouvrage met en variation la thématique des ambiances afin d'explorer sa portée heuristique et sa valeur opératoire. L'expérience ordinaire des passants est mise à l'épreuve des ambiances urbaines. Ainsi une pluralité de thèmes, liés par une approche cohérente, est examinée systématiquement à travers les chapitres du livre, qu'il s'agisse des espaces publics, des environnements sonores ou lumineux, des milieux souterrains ou de la marche en ville.
A Philosophy of Ambient Sound
This book presents the first book-length study of ambient sound as a key issue in sound studies and sonic philosophy. Taking a broad, media-philosophical approach, it explores ambient sound as a basic dimension of the sonic environment, sonic technologies, sonic arts and the material staging of listening. Through analyses of key concepts such as surroundability, mediatization, immanence, synthetization and continuous variation, the book elucidates how ambient aspects of sound influence our conceptions of what sound is and how it affects us by exposing sound’s relation to basic categories such as space, time, environment, medium and materiality. It also illuminates how the strategic production of ambient sound constitutes a leading aesthetic paradigm that has been a decisive factor in the shaping of the modern sonic environment – from key developments in experimental and popular music, sound art and cinematic sound design to the architectural-technological construction of listening spaces in concert halls and theaters and in current streaming infrastructures, digital surround sound and the everyday aesthetics of headphone listening.
