O boletim de ocorrência policial, ou registros administrativos, deve servir de base para as estatísticas criminais e de polícia judiciária, e nele devem estar contidos dados sobre os crimes, contravenções, autores e quaisquer outras informações que sejam de utilidade para tais estatísticas. As duas principais fontes de dados criminais em âmbito nacional disponibilizam informações de ordem quantitativa sobre a criminalidade violenta, mas mostram pouco qualitativamente. Este estudo tem sua importância na medida em que analisa os boletins de ocorrência policial, buscando mecanismos eficientes e eficazes na condução da elaboração de dados e informações que possam auxiliar na aplicação de políticas públicas voltadas à coibição e redução da criminalidade, com ênfase nas mortes violentas intencionais e, no âmbito acadêmico, boletins de ocorrência policial mais bem qualificados e padronizados podem ser mais úteis como fonte de dados para estudos e pesquisas de fenômenos relacionados à violência letal.
