From Federation to Communion
The starting point of this volume is that the LWF, the successor body to the short-lived Lutheran World Convention, was established on "four pillars" - rescue for the needy, common initiatives in mission, joint efforts in theology, and a common response to the ecumenical challenge. The volume traces what has happened to this founding vision by means of penetrating surveys of eight themes of service, mission, theology, ecclesiology, ecumenics, inclusiveness, and political and social justice as they have unfolded in Federation history. Most fundamental, as the title of the book indicates, has been the maturing of the LWF's self-understanding from a "free association of Lutheran churches" to a "communion of churches." New theological, ecclesiological, missionary, and sociopolitical insights concerning global and ecumenical Lutheranism emerge as the twentieth-century history of the international communion of Lutheran churches is recounted, celebrated, and evaluated in From Federation to Communion. The volume includes a Handbook of the Lutheran World Federation, which reviews eight LWF assemblies and presents concise biographies of Federation presidents and general secretaries.

Der Wehrmachtpfarrer Johannes Schröder hatte sich schon als junger Pastor für die Ziele der Bekennenden Kirche eingesetzt. An der Front wollte er diese auf seine eigene Weise verfolgen. Nachdem er 1943 bei Stalingrad in sowjetische Kriegsgefangenschaft geraten war, schloss er sich dem Nationalkomitee "Freies Deutschland" an und bekam die Möglichkeit, sich über den Rundfunk in über 80 Ansprachen an Hörer und Hörerinnen in Deutschland zu wenden. Die in Schröders Nachlass erhaltenen und hier zum ersten Mal vollständig edierten und kommentierten Predigten und Ansprachen zeugen von seinem wachen Gewissen und seinem Willen, dem Ungeist der Nationalsozialisten Widerstand zu leisten, ebenso wie von der Hoffnung auf ein neues und freies Deutschland nach dem Krieg. Die Dokumentation wird erschlossen durch Essays zu seiner Biographie, zum historischen Hintergrund, zu seiner theologischen Haltung sowie zur musikalischen Begleitung der Predigten.

The way in which the world's religions are intertwined in the dynamics of global development has become obvious in the twenty-first century. This also applies to Christianity. In view of the fact that its historiography is still predominantly regional or national, however, little is known about Christianity's historical process of development to become a religion that is globally active and plurally differentiated. The first volume takes up this challenge by presenting a comprehensive, interdenominational and interdisciplinary history of global Christianity from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century, for the first time in German-speaking countries. Renowned theologians and (church) historians clarify the turning-points in the Early Modern period that set the course for the global spread and fascinating plurality of modern Christianity.
