Dr. Pawel Kohoutek, veterinarian and womanizer, looks out the window one morning to see his mistress approaching his house. Farce ensues as Kohoutek attempts to hide the woman from his eccentric family, the family's lodgers, and various offbeat visitors. The woman, expecting love and children and a future, does not make things easy. As he frantically runs around trying to keep her a secret, Kohoutek's memories -- mostly involuntary and (in true postmodern fashion) of questionable accuracy -- reveal in hilarious detail the life and crises of a hapless libertine and the forces that created him.

He begins unabashedly"Yes indeed, I had been drinking peach vodka, brutishly longing for one last love before death, and immersed up to my ears in a life of dissolution." Polish novelist Pilch (His Current Woman) slyly weaves together a large-cast story of the wages of intoxication. Like many verbose drunks, the narrator is not without wry insights and mocking self-awareness; he likens the rehab center to a creative writing program. The analogy is apt since the novel's language mixes a bemusing sort of grandstanding amid formidable words like farinaceous, divigations, forfend, and horripilates. The center may remind one of Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, while the character names (Moses Alias I Alcohol, Don Juan the Rib, and the Hero of Socialist Labor) recall Thomas Pynchon. The ten short stories straddle the line between intimate revelation and drunken confession. The tales within reveal a nostalgic and poetic author, one who can pen a character's lyrical ode to the fate of his father's perfect chess table in one story and examine a teacher's desperate and dangerous infatuation with a student in the next. There is also a remarkably touching story that begins by describing his narrator's excitement at the possibility of a three-way with a seductive football fan named Anka Chow Chow. Irony, humour, gossip and love with an irresistible readability.

This book provides a concise historical outline of religion in Poland up until its entry into the European Union in 2004, together with a longer presentation of contemporary religious issues. Albeit largely mono-ethnic and overwhelmingly Catholic after the loss of its large Jewish population to the Holocaust, and subsequent post-World War II border shifts, traces of an historic diversity remain in Poland to date, playing a greater role than mere numbers would suggest. Poland's fairly robust religious life is affected by the country's continuing modernization and its various institutions, and this is discussed within a broad context. One of the unfortunate legacies of decades of communism is a stunted civil society; while at different levels there are conflicts involving religion, at the grassroots it is one of the few forces building much needed trust in present-day Polish society.
This book explores the different images of totalitarianism in 20th century literature and the capacity of the theory of Natural Semantic Metalanguage to be adopted in a comparative literary study in the analysis of four totalitarian literary works written in Polish and English, together with their translation into English and Polish respectively. The key question addressed here is the totalitarian experience, which, it is assumed, conditions the literary reflections of the regime provided by Aldous Huxley, George Orwell, Czesław Miłosz and Tadeusz Konwicki. Brief biographical details are provided with regards to each of the writers and their private experiences are linked with the works they published. Additionally, key concepts are named for each of the works subject to discussion, and it is their cross-linguistic analysis carried out within the NSM framework that forms the core of the book.
This volume is a collection of studies in generative (morpho)syntax and phonology, which grew out of the 6th Generative Phonology in Poland (GLiP) meeting that took place at the University of Warsaw in the spring of 2008. The sixteen papers, written by the leading scholars in linguistics as well as young researchers, give a representative flavour of investigations across (morpho)syntax and phonology from the current generative perspective. Drawing on recent advances in formal linguistics, the majority of studies in this volume test the applicability of available theoretical frameworks to selected bodies of data. Some papers discuss the adequacy of competing theoretical solutions in the light of new experimental results. The empirical data is drawn from a variety of languages including standard and dialectal Polish, Russian, Croatian, Czech, English, Frisian and Swahili.
