The Truth Behind the Rock

Oh no, it's happening -- you're turning into that girl. The one you never thought you'd become, the one who really wants to get engaged and can think of little else...the one who delivers a series of Oscar-worthy monologues about wanting to take the relationship to the next level, the one who tears out Tiffany ads and leaves them around the house, the one who finally agrees with her mother: "When are we going to get engaged?" Rest assured, you are not alone. Engagement stories tend to focus on the details of a beautifully orchestrated proposal crafted entirely unprompted by a dream boyfriend. Understandably, the unsavory details of the not-so-subtle hinting, the uncomfortable conversations, ...

Tiny Ladies in Shiny Pants

From the creator and director of Transparent and Emmy nominated writer for Six Feet Under comes a hilarious and unforgettable memoir. When Jill Soloway was just thirteen, she and her best friend donned the tightest satin pants they could find, poufed up their hair and squeezed into Candies heels, then headed to downtown Chicago in search of their one-and-only true loves forever: the members of whichever rock band was touring through town. Never mind that both girls still had braces, coke-bottle-thick glasses and had only just bought their first bras...they were fabulous, they felt beautiful, they were tiny ladies in shiny pants. Now that Jill is all grown up and a successful writer and produ...

Full of Life

While Access Hollywood host Nancy O’Dell was pregnant with her now one-year-old daughter, her girlfriends threw her a baby shower. In addition to baby clothes, diaper bags, and blankets, her friends gave her a scrapbook they’d filled with advice for what she should expect during pregnancy and childbirth, based on their own experiences. As Nancy flipped through the pages and read about what she’d already experienced (and panicked over), she thought to herself, “I wish somebody had told me that!” Even the countless books on pregnancy she’d read hadn’t mentioned any of the items in the scrapbook, and, it would turn out, Nancy would experience many more things during her pregnancy ...

In 1936, as television networks CBS, DuMont, and NBC experimented with new ways to provide entertainment, NBC deviated from the traditional method of single experimental programs to broadcast the first multi-part program, Love Nest, over a three-episode arc. This would come to be known as a miniseries. Although the term was not coined until 1954, several other such miniseries were broadcast, including Jack and the Beanstalk and Women in Wartime. In the mid-1960s the concept was developed into a genre that still exists. While the major broadcast networks pioneered the idea, it quickly became popular with cable and streaming services. This encyclopedic source contains a detailed history of 878 TV miniseries broadcast from 1936 to 2020, complete with casts, networks, credits, episode count and detailed plot information.

As a middle child raised middle class and stuck out in the middle of Louisiana, hilarious writer and actress Sarah Thyre often found her in–between existence far less than desirable. Even from a young age, Sarah found ways of shirking her own hated identity — whether by stealing someone else's or lying about her own. She changed her name, claimed to be a great outdoorsman, and solicited donations for her favorite charity — which turned out to be, in fact, her. In addition, Sarah lived through the violent struggles between her parents and their often troubled finances, and the stories with which she emerged populate this charming memoir.
