Holding Patterns: Air Transport and Foreign Policy in the Netherlands
Although air transport is indispensable to modern society, we know little about the diplomatic efforts that establish airline services. Nonetheless, aviation features prominently in the spectrum of international relations: in conflicts between states, for example, the suspension of landing rights is one of the first acts to symbolize serious discord. In tracing the unique cooperation between government and industry, this historical study underscores aviation as a prominent, but understudied topic in Dutch foreign relations.
Civil Aviation and the Globalization of the Cold War
This book focuses on the highly complex and intertwined relationship between civil aviation, technological globalization and Cold War politics. It explores how the advancement of Soviet civil aircraft engineering during the 1950s technically triggered the globalization of the Cold War. The study also shows how the processes of technological standardization facilitated transfers of technology and knowledge across the Iron Curtain and how East-West as well as East-South connections evolved. It uncovers the motives and reasons for this transfer of knowledge and expertise, and aims to identify the specific roles played by states, international organizations and interpersonal networks. By taking a global approach to this history, the book advances ongoing debates in the field. It reassesses Europe’s role in the Cold War, pointing out the substantial differences in how Western Europe and the United States viewed the Communist world. This book will be of interest to scholars of international history, the history of technology and Cold War history.
Flying the Flag
Since the end of World War II, European airlines have revealed their own operational style. By analyzing seven European flag-carriers, Dienel and Lyth provide a comparative study of the airline business, covering government policy, aircraft procurement, network growth, commercial performance and collaboration with other airlines and transport modes. This study also seeks to explain why national flag-carriers have survived in an age of globalization and strategic alliances. A concluding chapter views the contrasting American air transport industry.

Der emeritierte Oppelner Erzbischof Nossol sprach vom "Proprium silesiacum" des schlesischen Katholizismus. Worin besteht das? Kann man etwas Derartiges annehmen, wahrnehmen? Die vorliegenden Aufsätze und Beiträge, die meisten von ihnen auf einer Tagung zum Thema "Region - Religion - Identität" am 7. und 8. August 2015 in Rottenburg-Bad Niedernau vorgetragen, wollen Konstituenten und Interferenzen regionaler religiöser Kultur und spezifischer Frömmigkeitspraxis, den Konnex von Landschaft, Politik, Kultur, Mentalität anhand von regionalen schlesischen Beispielen aufgreifen. Subjektive Erfahrungen kamen dabei vielfach ebenso zur Sprache.
