Linguistic and Rhetorical Perspectives on Congressional Hearings
Congressional hearings are often the most requested government documents in US libraries. However, among the genres that have been traditionally of interest to political discourse analysts – e.g. political speeches, political interviews, policy documents – hearings have not been of much scrutiny on the part of discourse scholars, an attitude somehow contrasting with the lay public’s interest. Cinzia Giglioni takes the opportunity to gain a unique view into the actors, the interested parties, the issues, from a linguistic and rhetorical perspective. Her intent is to provide an in-depth analysis of witnesses’ opening statements, which are probably the most salient parts in a congressional hearing. The investigation begins with, but is not constricted by, theoretical aspects, which are integrated with empirical observations and suggestions for critical reading.

The Representation of REFUGEES and MIGRANTS in European National Media Discourses from 2015 to 2017
Though the refugee crisis was discussed in many countries e.g. in Greece, Hungary, Italy and Spain long before 2015, it began to receive cross- European press coverage only after Angela Merkel’s statement ‘Wir schaffen das!’ on the August 30th 2015 This data-based study focuses on, how journalists report on and leading politicians make statements about refugees, migrants and asylum seekers in media and frame these humans after Angela Merkels’ sentence in 2015 until the end of 2017. This volume uses mainly Corpus Linguistics but also Communicative Science for the analysis of labelling strategies and the usage of words, collocations and grammar systems used by journalists and politicians in different European countries in comparison. This empirical volume pictures language specific variation and change of labels. To enable a contrastive study between the press discourses of many European countries, every chapter analyses the data consisting of newspaper articles describing the discourse of a particular country, including discourses of some transit countries around the borders of the Schengen Area of the European Union, which barely have been covered in other studies.

Error Analysis in the World. A Bibliography
Linguistic errors are manifold, e.g. in the mother tongue, in the acquisition of foreign languages, in translations, as slip of the tongue or typo. The present compilation of all subject-related publications is a comprehensive bibliography for the field of linguistic errors. In a compact introduction, Bernd Spillner additionally provides an overview of linguistic, didactic and psycholinguistic methods of the analysis and assessment of the errors and their therapy. For the first time, publications from numerous countries around the world were included which have not yet been considered. Uncertainty in deliberate lexical interventions
Language managers in their different forms (language planners, terminologists, professional neologists …) have long tried to intervene in the lexical usage of speakers, with various degrees of success: Some of their lexical items (partly) penetrate language use, others do not. Based on electronic networks of practice of the Esperanto speech community, Mélanie Maradan establishes the foundation for a new method to extract speakers’ opinions on lexical items from text corpora. The method is intended as a tool for language managers to detect and explore in context the reasons why speakers might accept or reject lexical items.

The series is conceptualized as a forum for Translation Studies research. This concise bibliography on South-African Languages and Linguistics was compiled on the occasion of the 20th International Congress of Linguists in Cape Town, South Africa, July 2018. Kommunikation für Europa II
Der Band versammelt Beiträge der dritten deutsch-polnischen Konferenz zum Rahmenthema «Kommunikation für Europa» (nach 2003 und 2005), die vom 12. bis 14. September 2007 in Pobierowo (Polen) stattfand. Veranstalter waren das Institut für Germanistik der Universität Szczecin und das Institut für Deutsche Philologie der Ernst-Moritz-Arndt Universität Greifswald. Im Zentrum dieser Konferenz stand die Frage nach dem Zusammenhang von Sprache und Identität, überwiegend bezogen auf die Geschichte und Gegenwart Polens und Deutschlands. Neben theoretisch ausgerichteten Beiträgen zur Identitätsbildung durch und mit Sprache enthält der Band Fallstudien zum Ausdruck von Identität u. a. in puristischen Bestrebungen, Wörterbüchern, Phraseologismen, Übersetzungen und im Fremdsprachenunterricht.
