Beauty and the Bin

This bath bomb's ticking. What happens when friendship and eco-friendship collide?Parents are humiliating - especially when they're eco-warriors.Laurie loves her family and she wants to join them in making the world a better place. But right now, she doesn't want to fish food out of bins, she wants to wear a pair of ordinary tights, and have the money to order a hot chocolate at the café after school. When a competition comes to Silverdale High looking for the next generation of entrepreneurs, Laurie finds herself unexpectedly in the spotlight. The homemade beauty remedies and potions that she has been posting online are stealing the show, and the most popular girl in the school wants to team up for the win. It seems like Laurie can achieve normality - and even popularity - at last. But will her eco-warrior family accept that she no longer wants to be part of their close-knit gang and can she find success and glory without losing sight of her true self?Jo O'Connell's Beauty and the Bin is a fresh and funny debut about friends, family and school, and how that can fit with being a young eco-warrior.

This significant volume is the first to use primary research evidence to examine tourism, ageing and the implications of an ageing population for the visitor economy. Adopting a multidisciplinary approach, this book offers insights into the new opportunities, threats and challenges that the growing ageing-tourism markets poses. The ageing population has created a demographic time bomb with a population structure that is skewed towards a growing proportion of older people. When this is combined with the impact of health conditions, such as dementia, the future shape of visitor demand and tourism behaviour is likely to change and face many new challenges, albeit at different rates in time and space. Chapters include cutting-edge insights into future issues, while interviews are used to illustrate and explain issues affecting ageing and tourism, creating a much-needed synthesis of the ageing–tourism nexus to demonstrate intellectual leadership around this theme. This book will be of great interest to all upper-level students, academics and researchers in the fields of tourism, hospitality, leisure studies, and health and social care.

Performing Peace and Friendship

Performing Peace and Friendship tells the story of how the Soviet Union succeeded in utilizing the World Festival of Youth and Students in its cultural diplomacy from late Stalinism through the early Khrushchev period. Pia Koivunen discusses the evolution of the youth gathering into a Soviet cultural product starting from the first festival held in Prague in 1947 and ending with the Moscow 1957 gathering, the latter becoming one of the most frequently referred moments of Khrushchev’s Thaw. By combining both institutional and grass-roots’ perspectives, the book widens our understanding of what Soviet cultural diplomacy was in practice, re-evaluates the agency of young people and provides new insights into the Soviet role in the cultural Cold War. Koivunen argues that rather than simply being orchestrated rallies by the Kremlin bureaucrats, the World Youth Festivals also became significant spaces of transnational encounters for young people, who found ways to employ the event for overcoming the various restrictions and boundaries of the Cold War world.
