The Ecology of Marine Fishes
  • Language: en
  • Pages: 1353

The Ecology of Marine Fishes

Marine fishes have been intensively studied, and some of the fundamental ideas in the science of marine ecology have emerged from the body of knowledge derived from this diverse group of organisms. This unique, authoritative, and accessible reference, compiled by 35 luminary ecologists, evolutionary biologists, and ichthyologists, provides a synthesis and interpretation of the large, often daunting, body of information on the ecology of marine fishes. The focus is on the fauna of the eastern Pacific, especially the fishes of the California coast, a group among the most diverse and best studied of all marine ecosystems. A generously illustrated and comprehensive source of information, this volume will also be an important launching pad for future research and will shed new light on the study of marine fish ecology worldwide. The contributors touch on many fields in biology, including physiology, development, genetics, behavior, ecology, and evolution. The book includes sections on the history of research, both published and unpublished data, sections on collecting techniques, and references to important earlier studies.

Early Life History of Red Drum (Sciaenops Ocellatus) in the Northcentral Gulf of Mexico

"Knowledge of the early life history of red drum in the Gulf of Mexico, particularly in north central Gulf waters, is inadequate to describe the recruitment process in this species. The overall objectives of the study described in this report were to characterize diel, vertical, and horizontal patterns in the distribution of red drum larvae and their planktonic prey in offshore waters; to document trophic ontogeny and prey selectivity; and to determine growth rates of field-caught larvae using otolith growth increment methodology"--National Sea Grant Library publication website

Preliminary Guide to the Identification of the Early Life History Stages of Lutjanid Fishes of the Western Central Atlantic

"This guide is intended for the identification of early life history (ELH) specimens of snappers (Lutjanidae) collected principally by plankton nets from marine waters of the western central Atlantic. This area is bounded by 35° north latitude on the north, 50° west longitude on the east, the Equator on the south, and the continental margins on the west. It is basically the area defined by FAO as the Western central Atlantic Fishing Area 31 which includes the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. The region is tropical and subtropical with important fishing areas and a high diversity of species. The area is also characterized by a large number of coral reefs"--Introduction, paragraph 1
