East Timor

As the world's newest independent nation, the challenges facing East Timor are particularly acute. Per capita income is roughly $300, making it one of the world's poorest nations. There also remains the possibility of difficult relations with its giant neighbor, Indonesia. This comprehensive volume is the first serious analysis of East Timor's economic prospects. It draws on local as well as international expertise, from both academics and policy makers. Issues covered include international economic relations, agriculture, finance and infrastructure, and political institutions.

"There is real personal danger for anthropologists who dare to speak and write against terror; by doing so, they potentially and sometimes actually bring the terror down on themselves."—Jeffrey A. Sluka, from the Introduction Death Squad is the first work to focus specifically on the anthropology of state terror. It brings together an international group of anthropologists who have done extensive research in areas marked by extreme forms of state violence and who have studied state terror from the perspective of victims and survivors. This two-volume study explores the economy of East Timor, of which very little has been written since the country gained independence in 2002. Currently, no comprehensive account exists of the economic history of the country. The former cannot be properly understood without a knowledge of the historical process that created the present-day situation. This research monograph is the first book to combine a historical analysis of the creation and development of the economy of East Timor from the earliest times to the present, and an analysis of the main contemporary problems facing the East Timorese economy. Volume I considers East Timor from a chronological perspective, as an occupied country up to the point at which Indonesia leave. This book will appeal to scholars and students of economics, political and social science. It will also be of interest to practitioners in these fields as it focuses on down-to-earth problems that need to be solved for the economy to develop.

Historical Dictionary of East Timor

East Timor, also known as Timor-Leste, comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, located at the eastern end of the Indonesian archipelago. East Timor was among the last of colonial territories to become independent, and it actually had to be liberated twice. First, after more than four centuries of Portuguese colonial rule, it achieved independence in 1975 only to be invaded and occupied by Indonesia. After a blood-soaked occupation of 24 years and following intense international pressure, the Jakarta-regime only grudgingly allowed East Timor to form a nation of its own in 1999. Since then, the new state has faced further armed clashes and is only now able to seriously engage in nation-building. Historical Dictionary of East Timor relates the turbulent history of this country through a chronology, an introductory essay, an expansive bibliography, and over 200 cross-referenced dictionary entries on significant persons, events, places, organizations, and other aspects of East Timor history from the earliest times to the present.
