The Battle Over the Meaning of Everything

A compelling eyewitness account of the recent courtroom drama in Dover, Pennsylvania that put evolution on trial. Journalist Gordy Slack offers a riveting, personal, and often amusing first-hand account that details six weeks of some of the most widely ranging, fascinating, and just plain surreal testimony in U.S. legal history—a battle between hard science and religious conservatives wishing to promote a new version of creationism in schools. During the Kitzmiller vs. Dover Areas School Board trial, the members of the local school board defended their decision to require teachers to present intelligent design alongside evolution as an explanation for the origins and diversity of life on e...

Ruling Against the Dover Area (PA) School District for Requiring That Intelligent Design be Taught as Part of the Biology Curriculum

On 11/19/04, the Defendant Dover (PA) Area School Dist. announced that teachers would be required to read the following statement to students in the 9th grade biology class: ¿Because Darwin¿s Theory is a theory, it continues to be tested as new evidence is discovered. The Theory is not a fact . . . Intelligent Design (ID) is an explanation of the origin of life that differs from Darwin¿s view.¿ On 1/214/04, Plaintiffs filed a suit challenging the constitutional validity of the resolution. In a ruling, Judge Jones found that the school board did have religious intentions when it added the ID concept to the curriculum, and also that the concept of ID is religion and not science. The verdict is only binding in the Middle dist. of PA but is likely to influence other judges.

In this fascinating story of evolution, religion, politics, and personalities, Matthew Chapman captures the story behind the headlines in the debate over God and science in America In Kitzmiller v. Dover Board of Education, decided in late 2005, a Republican judge rendered a surprising verdict in a case that pitted the teaching of intelligent design (sometimes known as "creationism in a lab coat") against the teaching of evolution. Taking place in a small Pennsylvania school district, the case had national repercussions, all the way up to President Bush, who said he believed intelligent design should be taught as "an alternative theory" to evolution. Matthew Chapman, the great-great-grandson...

Analysis of Creationism in the United States from Scopes (1925) to Kitzmiller (2005) and its Effect on the Nation ́s Science Education System

Creationism is based on a fundamental belief in the inerrancy of the bible and negatively affects science education because creationist proponents insist on the inclusion of supernatural explanations for the appearance of species, in particular the origin of humans. This detrimental effect on education is particularly relevant in the United States, where almost 70% of the population rejects the idea of naturalistic evolution and the majority of American students struggle to meet the college-readiness benchmarks in science and math. This dissertation provides a comprehensive look at the issue from historical, judicial and educational perspectives. Twenty-four legal cases in the United States ...
