Mentions that Captain Josiah Roberts has recently returned from Canton in China after a mission to procure information on free trade and the best markets. After returning with this intelligence several Gentlemen of this town, have form'd an association, of which he is a member; and they are building a ship, to be equip'd & furnish'd in the most complete manner, and to be commanded by himself. Notes Roberts wants to sail to the northwest coast of America to procure furs for trade in Japan and the northern ports of China, where the Flag of the United States, hath not yet had access. Roberts believes he will profit greatly from the voyage. Goes on to praise Roberts's abilities. Wants to know if Knox can get the proper credentials from President George Washington for the voyage. The credentials will hopefully prevent interruption or annoyance, from any European Vessels, that may navigate those seas, as well as give him friendly reception at ports where he needs assistance. Reports that Roberts will keep a journal of the voyage, and that a copy will be sent to Washington. Docket marked Answered. See GLC02437.05122 for Knox's reply.
