John de Courcy, the first Anglo-Norman conqueror of Ulster, was perhaps the most famous member of the powerful Courcy family. Lords and warriors, conquerors and administrators, the Courcys epitomize the Anglo-Norman elite and their impact on Britain and Ireland during the 11th and 12th centuries. This book traces the family's history.

John De Courcy, Prince of Ulster

John de Courcy was a Knight of noble birth but bleak prospects. He fought his way to the notice of Henry II who laughingly granted him Ulster "provided he could conquer it by force". John won his chance at the Battle of Downpatrick in 1177 and ruled his Norman lordship from Carrickfergus Castle until his demise at the hands of King John.

John de Courcy came to Ireland in 1170 as a young landless adventurer, seeking honour and glory, ready to fight and to conquer. And fight he did, always leading his men from the front in battle after battle. His conquests were limited to the present-day counties of Antrim and Down, but he ruled there as Prince of Ulster and challenged the power of the King. His life reads like a story from the realms of legend, and his eventual destruction at the hands of King John adds poignancy to the tale.

Expertly authored by the co-editor of the best-selling text Cultural Criminology Unleashed, this book re-examines criminology in a global context. Wide-ranging and up-to-date, it covers the topics of colonialism and post-colonialism, genocide, state control, the impact of September 11th and the post-9/11 world. Exploring the relationship between a modern discipline and modernity, it reworks the history and composition of criminology in light of September 11th and the prevalence of genocide in modernity. Analizing statistics, anthropology and the everyday assumptions of criminology's history, this text addresses the political and scholarly grip on the territorial state and the absence of a global criminology. Rejecting the prevalent belief that September 11th and the responses it evoked were exceptions that either destroyed or revealed the absence of global legal order, the author argues that, in fact, they confirm the nature of the world order of modernity. A compelling and topical volume, this is a must read for anyone interested or studying in the areas of criminology and criminal justice.

The Pig War

The Pig War

On May 15, 1859, an American settler on San Juan Island shot a pig belonging to the Hudson's Bay Company. This seemingly insignificant act was the spark that almost set aflame the strangest of many confrontations between Britain and the United States on the northwest coast of North America. On one side of the border dispute over the strategically located San Juan Islands was Governor James Douglas, determined to protect the interests of the Hudson's Bay Company and prove the military superiority of Britain. On the other side was General William Selby Harney, spoiling for a fight and believing in America's manifest destiny to rule the continent. In this lively account of the conflict that became known as the Pig War, Rosemary Neering traces the events that led to the standoff in the San Juans and brings to life the memorable characters who played leading roles in the drama. The book is an excellent travel companion to anyone visiting the San Juans and the original American and British camps that are open to the public.
