ÿBrian Iddon discovered a passion for chemistry as an eleven-year-old schoolboy. He went on to study it at university, obtaining a BSc, PhD and DSc, and taught and researched his subject at the highest level before making his name in the wider world by presenting a demonstration lecture called ?The Magic of Chemistry? to audiences across Britain and Europe. Brian?s second career was in politics. Elected to Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council in 1977, he fulfilled a wide range of public roles over the next 20 years. In 1997 he was elected to Parliament by the safe Labour seat of Bolton South East, retiring in 2010 after a career in which he wrestled with a range of hot topics from drugs to euthanasia and from health food to peace in the Middle East. He helped to steer through three Acts of Parliament and was a member of the Science and Technology Select Committee. In retirement, in addition to voluntary work, Dr Iddon has finally found time to write his memoirs ? this is Volume 1.
Strawberry Hill & Horace Walpole
My buildings are paper, like my writings, and both will blow away in ten years after I am dead.' Horace Walpole died in 1790 yet remarkably Strawberry Hill is still standing over 200 years later. During the latter part of the 18th century, Horace Walpole, son of England's first Prime Minister, transformed a modest house into his own 'little Gothic castle,' creating a tourist attraction, which was as popular in his day as it is in ours. Walpole was a compulsive collector and filled the house with a pioneering collection of antiques and curios. The house and gardens have recently undergone a multimillion-pound restoration project to return Walpole's Gothic vision to its original splendour. AUTHOR: John Iddon worked for several years at St Mary's University College where, amongst other things, he trained the Strawberry Hill guides, wrote the first guidebook and ran an MA in Interpreting Heritage Sites. Explaining Our World
This book offers a rational and philosophical approach to environmental interpretation, the educational purpose of which is particularly relevant in an age when specialization tends to distance most people from direct experience of the way the environment works. In reviewing the practice of interpretation, the author emphasises that effective work in this field must be finely tuned. The interpreter must constantly bear in mind the real value and significance of the features interpreted and the needs of the visitors to whom interpretation is addressed.
