This book is an inspiring collection of memories and accounts told by people close to Coach Cox. The stories are more than forty years old and the details may not be 100 percent accurate. As a result, if you knew Coach Cox, your version of the story may vary according to what has become your perception. Memories tend to fade with the years, and some tales about him may become bigger than life. Players would repeat stories about their beloved coach, never really knowing for sure if they were real or not. The tales are fun, and seem to get better each time they were told. Many tales, true or not, were believable-if you knew the man. Coach Cox heard all these stories about himself, and he seemed to enjoy them. In fact, he may have actually encouraged them! He did enjoy a good laugh, especially if it was about him. One thing is certain: John W. Cox was, indeed, bigger than life, and a Legend to all who knew him.

Research on the Cox family genealogy was begun by Rev. Simeon O. Coxe (1877-1955). Verl F. Weight (one of the many descendants of the Cox family) and Mrs. Charles W. Cox (Willie Miller) further researched, compiled and published the information into the first edition in mimeographed copies in 1962. When time took its toll on these copies and years of work began to fade away, Mary Carol Cox volunteered to retype and publish As A Tree Grows into a paperback book.

THOMAS THOMAS DESCENDANTS

The Author’s pioneer ancestors were early settlers in the western movement, sometimes trekking roughly cleared pathways behind teams of oxen. Family meetings and marriages at New Ipswich, NH, Watervliet, NY, New Castle, KY, Richmond, IN, Old Oxford, IL, Mt. Pleasant, IW, Firth, NE, and Denver, CO, form the basis of this historical and genealogy story. Family chronicles, deeds, wills, census records, tombstones and written biological sketches form the basis for this book. Research was conducted in 87 counties in 22 states from Maine to Colorado, and also Wales, Scotland and England, over a 16 year period.
