lapses in Thinking By the person i Am presents documentation and texts from Josephine Pyde's eponymous exhibition shown at the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco, and Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania. In this body of work, Pryde combines a series of color photographs of hands touching objects with a scale-model freight train and track, replete with miniaturized graffiti, that took visitors in a short ride through the exhibition. Through photography and sculpture, Pryde pays close attention to the nature of image making and the conditions display, subtly reworking codes and conventions to alter our cultural perception and understanding of each. In this book, “The Individual,” an essay by Pryde originally published in the journal Texte zur Kunst, is followed by an essay from CCA Wattis exhibition curator Jamie Stevens and a conversation between Pryde and ICA curator Anthony Elms. In photographic works that encompass the full range of the medium's historical and current genres, styles, and techniques, but also through sculpture and writing, the Berlin- and London-based artist Josephine Pryde (born 1967 in Alnwick, Northumberland, UK) offers incisive, often ironic, and provocative commentary on the values, hierarchies, and economies subtending the field of contemporary art against the backdrop of larger societal shifts. Estranging the familiar or conversely expressing the common in a radically unforeseen manner, Pryde's ingenuous choice of subject matter, unusual formal solutions and surprising juxtapositions continue to capture international exhibition audiences.

David Lamelas

  • Categories: Art

Published by the University Art Museum, California State University, Long Beach in association with Getty Publications The renowned Argentine conceptual artist David Lamelas (born 1946) has an expansive oeuvre of sensory, restive, and evocative work. This book, published to coincide with the first monographic exhibition of the artist’s work in the United States, offers an incisive look into Lamelas’s art. The guiding analytic theme is the artist’s adaptability to place and circumstance, which invariably influences his creative production. Lamelas left Argentina in the mid-1960s to study at Saint Martin’s in London. Since then, he has divided his time among various cities. While the typical narrative invoked about artists like Lamelas is one of “internationalism,” his nomadic movement from one place or conceptual framework to the next has always been more “postnational” than “international.”

Essays and stories on fashion, art, and culture in the New York of the 2010s. We were supposed to meet Rose McGowan at Café d'Alsace after the party, but she cancelled at the last minute. I saw on Twitter that she had been hit with a drug possession charge, which she insisted was a scheme to keep her Weinstein dirt quiet. I hadn't even read her Weinstein story… I still wanted to know that the articles were being published, and in large quantities, but reading stories of abuse and humiliation was as stupefying as a hangover. I didn't feel empowered; I only felt more hopeless. I wanted to watch the patriarchy go up in flames, but I wasn't excited about what was being pitched to replace it. ...
