Public Violence in Islamic Societies
This exploration of the role of violence in the history of Islamic societies considers the subject particularly in the context of its implementation as a political strategy to claim power over the public sphere. Violence, both among Muslims and between Muslims and non-Muslims, has been the object of research in the past, as in the case of jihad, martyrdom, rebellion or criminal law. This book goes beyond these concerns in addressing, in a comprehensive and cross-disciplinary fashion, how violence has functioned as a basic principle of Islamic social and political organization in a variety of historical and geographical contexts.Contributions trace the use of violence by governments in the history of Islam, shed light on legal views of violence, and discuss artistic and religious responses. Authors lay out a spectrum of attitudes rather than trying to define an Islamic doctrine of violence. Este libro hace un ameno repaso a todos los acontecimientos que marcaron los cincos siglos de historia de la presencia de España en África, el reino olvidado. Durante la Edad Media el enemigo de los reinos cristianos peninsulares fue el invasor musulmán. El impulso guerrero fue perseguir al enemigo más allá del mar con la finalidad de conjurar nuevas invasiones. Isabel la Católica, en su testamento, reflejó el deseo de la corona de combatir al infiel en el norte africano, tomar posesión de esas tierras en previsión de nuevas incursiones musulmanas, combatir la piratería y controlar los avances turcos en el Mediterráneo Occidental. En el siglo XIX, con el colonialismo europeo, España consideró que Marruecos era asunto suyo. Sentimiento que se avivó ante la pérdida de Cuba, Filipinas y Puerto Rico. Sin embargo, el Protectorado fue un continuo conflicto que marcó la vida nacional del primer tercio del siglo XX y, todavía hoy, no se han resuelto las cuestiones de soberanía en el Sahara Occidental tras la salida española.
